Business sinessSpotlight Local Economy Continues to Outpace National Economy Fayetteville, NC grows 6.8% as national GDP contracts by 2.4% According to data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Fay- etteville, NC’s Gross Domestic Product has continued to see positive growth through 08-09. Our community has expanded by 6.8% making us 5th in the national ranking for percent of GDP growth. BEA also reported that 80% of the GDP of the metropolitan areas measured, declined. GDP is a sum value of all products and services in an economy. “In large part, our history has been a growth rate just north of flat and climb- ing, and that’s been the secret of this community’s success for many years,” said Doug Peters, president of the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Cham- ber of Commerce. Te BEA news release stated that nationally drops in durable-goods manu- facturing, construction, and professional and business services led to our national decline in GDP. Te Fayetteville metro area grew in all of those areas except construction. Notable growth of GDP by industry includes an 18.6% rise in finance and insurance, a 12.2% growth in utilities, and a 39.9% expansion in educational resources.
