page 2 The lyre letter The Alpha Chi Omega Educational Corporation supports Xi Chapter collegians to achieve academically through funding scholarships, funding educational resources, and honoring collegians who exhibit academic and leadership success. 2014 Goals Since the inception of the Educational Corporation in 2000, the Educational Corporation has utilized the majority of its funds to provide educational resources such as computers and printers to Xi Chapter. Over the last four years, the Educational Corporation utilized all of its general funds to support renovating the basement. This depleted the majority of the corporation's discretionary funds. For 2014, the goal is to add additional funds to the scholarship account so that more scholarships may be given out to collegians. All small amounts add up to larger amounts. Please consider giving a small donation to support the education of another sorority sister. Think about Donating in the Future Just as ACW has invested in your development through collegiate activities, the Educational Corporation would like you to consider providing a small portion of your estate to Alpha Chi, a small donation such as $5,000– $10,000 can make a lasting impact on the chapter. If you are considering providing a donation to Xi Chapter through your estate planning, contact me for more information. As to specific language to include in your last will and testament, we suggest the following language if you want to leave money to Xi Educational Corporation. I hereby give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $______ to The Xi Educational Corporation, a Nebraska nonprofit, tax-deductible corporation (52-1808517), with offices at 6800 Marcus Road, Lincoln, NE 68516. Loyally, Denise R. McLain '81 President Xi Educational Corporation (402) 730-6708 W hen Angela Dierking Brase '96 came to the University of Nebraska she didn't know much about the Greek system. No one in her family had been Greek before her, but she knew that by joining a sorority she would be afforded many opportunities that she would not have otherwise. "I wanted to meet new people and have the full college experience," Angela says. "My undergraduate experience with Alpha Chi is something that I will never forget. The one thing about the Xi Chapter that has always held true is that they value the person you are, not what those around us think we should conform to. It allows people to be who they are, without any false pretenses, and that is hard to find." Angela believes that her undergraduate experience prepared her for life after college by paving the way for dealing with adversity. "When you are in a house with so many women from different walks of life and personalities you learn how to find the good in people. You tend to find commonalities, rather than the things that keep you apart. It's an experience that's helped me in my personal and professional life." Angela graduated with a degree in journalism- advertising. When she moved to rural Nebraska after getting married she found that there wasn't much to do with her degree there, so she went back to school and got her RN degree. She now works as a triage nurse and manager at a medical clinic. "My pledge class is unique in the fact that we are scattered throughout the U.S. now. Unfortunately, not many stayed in Nebraska after graduation. Even though everyone is far apart, social networking sites have made it easier to stay in contact," Angela says. "It's one of those things that no matter how long it's been since you've talked to someone, you can pick up right where you left off." Now that Angela is older and has children, she feels that it is important to support the Xi Chapter. "Knowing that my daughters might one day follow in my footsteps and join Alpha Chi, I want to make sure they have the same positive experiences I had. Being involved with the house now, and comparing it to when I was in college, I am amazed at the changes that have been made," Angela says. "The first time I took my oldest daughter to the house, she was in awe, and said, 'I'm going to live here someday.' That's why I help support for the future. "I believe it's important to support the chapter through volunteerism or monetary gifts, as it is an investment in the future. It is the laughter, camaraderie, and sisterhood that I remember the most. In order to keep Alpha Chi one of the best sororities on campus, we need the support of members past and present. When I hear about Alpha Chi, I want to be proud of what it represents," Angela says. Angela lives in Davenport, Nebraska, with her husband, Mitch, and their two daughters, Sera and Addison. They enjoy spending time at the lake, and are still faithful Husker fans with season tickets.
