SOCCER Oroville 0 Corning 11 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING—Scoring a hat trick is one of the more memorable moments a soccer player can achieve, but for Corning’s Jorge Machado it was just the start of his day. Machado netted a pair of hat tricks — six goals — as the Cardinals demolished Oroville 11-0, Tuesday, in a Northern Section Division I boys soccer playoff game. The win sends Corning to their third consecutive championship game and a chance to repeat as the Northern Sec- tion’s best in a rematch with West Val- ley. Machado opened the game for Corning, not with a goal, but with an assist in the 6th minute. The senior forward took a throw-in down the left side of goal and then cen- tered a pass through the goal mouth to Francisco Pano, who knocked it home with an opponent draped all over him. Machado got his own first goal of the game in the 23rd minute when he took advantage of a ball bouncing freely inside Oroville’s 6-yard line. Another misplayed ball by the Tigers nine minutes later led to Macha- do’s second goal in similar fashion. Robert Garcia then made the game 4-0 for Corning headed into halftime when he scored from 10 yards out in the 39th minute. Oroville opened the second half by scoring a goal — except it was on their own net when a clearance was sent in over their goalie’s head from 25 yards out. The rout continued. Juan Serrano netted a sixth goal for the Cardinals. Then two minutes later Garcia sent a cross into the Oroville box that was fumbled by the Tigers’ keeper right to the waiting feet of Machado for his third goal. Corning kept pressing and six min- utes later Pano volleyed home his sec- ond goal of the game. Within the same minute Corning scored again as Pano found Machado for what turn out to the start of a natur- al hat trick. A few minutes later, Machado scored his fifth goal of the game by dribbling past the Oroville defense and firing a bullet into the top of the net. Then finally in the 79th minute Cosme Flores found Machado for his sixth goal and the team’s 11th of the day. The Lady Cardinals lost their semi- final game to Sutter 5-1. Things get tougher, quickly, for the Warriors (14-13), as they head out on the road Thursday night to face No. 2 seed Happy Camp. Mercy had few problems against Champion Christian, building up a double-digit lead in the early stages and cruis- ing from there. There was a slight pause for concern when the Warriors’ floor general Mitchell Lopez went to the bench with seven minutes to play in the first half after picking up two fouls. However, even that didn’t faze Mercy as the Warriors outscored the Mustangs 12-4 with Lopez on the bench and took a 32-16 lead into halftime. Royce Crane led Mercy with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jeremie Jones added 10 points and eight rebounds and Lopez on an off shooting night put up 10 points. Jarrett Gash had six points off the bench, Steven Rodriguez added four and Michael Wang had four points and nine rebounds. Isaac Williams collected five boards and scored two points and Leon Liu added some quality minutes off the bench. Luke Stephens led the Mustangs with 16 points. Zach Gawthrop had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Roberts had 10 points.
