Civilization emerged and developed around it; songs and stories romanticize it; and here in America, our forefathers fought range wars trying to control it. Water, pure, clean, abundant and, for the most part, pretty much taken for granted. No one really thinks about it much or misses it until its gone. The same may be said for electricity and “clean air.” So, when the men and women of our local public utility step up to avert an impending crisis like the one posed several weeks ago when a main water pipe failed leaving tens of thousands of Cumberland County residents without water, something must be said. That situation dictates that we take a moment and refl ect on our local public utility, its service, staff, management and fi eld professionals who serve us so well. When it comes to managing and delivering clean water, electricity and sewer lines, the routine challenges PWC undertakes each and every day are far from glamorous but extremely diffi cult and vital to Fayetteville and Cumberland County’s quality of life. We use the services, enjoy them and pretty much take them for granted. Like I said, no one misses them until they are gone. However, there are many other things our public utility provides to Fayetteville and Cumberland County residents that are not always as obvious as water and electricity but, none the less, impact our lives daily. I’m talking about preservation of the environment (think the Grinding of the Greens), community commitment and active participation (think United Way) in our community. Look a little deeper. Think about PWC’s role in business, economic and military Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast February 18 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Thursday February 17 Saturday February 19 as a subtle process that needs not be loud, boastful or arrogant. The proof of “real” leadership will be found always in the success of the outcomes. In all my 20 plus years affi liation with PWC I have never met or heard of anyone who did not take pride in working for our public utility. That’s pretty amazing in and of itself. So, kudos to Wally Watt Watcher and Willie Water Drop and the entire staff and management of our local PWC for a job well done. Our community is growing and we need your help. Keep up the good work and know that it is appreciated. Thanks for reading. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? edi- tor@upandcomingweekly.com.
