Thursday, January 30, 2014 – Daily News 3A Community people&events 60th anniversary The saga of Buster the poinsettia mals and children. If I want you to bloom again next year at Christmas, I must put you in a sunny window now and keep your soil moist. When your leaves drop, your stems need to be cut back to two buds and really reduce the water. When the frost is over, I have to place you in a sunny protected spot outside. Then, starting in October, you have to be covered every evening so you get no light for 14 hours a day. That seems like a lot of trouble for a Poinsettia, but Buster, I'm going to try to do it for you. So, behave yourself and quit looking so cute. Meanwhile, my husband is walking through the room and asks me what I am doing. "Having a serious talk with Buster" I say. He just looks at me and keeps on walking. By Shirley Felder There he sits, looking hopefully at me, looking perky. "Listen", I say. "Christmas has been over for a month. You're history." He still sits there, looking as healthy as ever. "O.K. Buster," I say, because that's his name. "In years past, your siblings decently gave up and I was able to discard them. But no, you have to be different." Do plants have feelings? There must be something I can do without feeling guilty. I will have to do some investigating. To start with, Buster, did you know your color doesn't come from your flowers (which are yellowish, in the center, and inconspicuous) but from your bracto, which is your petal like leaf, in case you didn't know. You only set flowers and get your color when the nights are long and the days short. You came from Mexico and were used to decorate churches at Christmastime and were called "Nativity Flower." You were named after the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel Poinsett, who served from 1825 to 1829. He sent the tropical Poinsettia to America. His policies in Mexico were unpopular and the Mexicans coined the word "poinsettismo" which means intrusive and officious behavior. I think that describes you, Buster. If you had stayed in your native land you would grow to be 10 to 16 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Yikes. This is also what I found out. You are a member of the euphorbia or spurge family, named after Euphorbus, physician to King Juba of Mauretania who was married to the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra. Does that make you royalty? I doubt it. Spurge was one of the powerful purgatives used in the Middle Ages to rid the body of black bile and melancholy. Taken in quantity the euphorbias are poisonous and their sap can cause a blistering rash. I guess you could turn evil if you want to, therefore, you must be kept away from ani- The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with Cascade District Garden Club; California Garden Clubs, Inc.; Pacific Region Garden Clubs and National Garden Clubs, Inc.
