Geldings are put through dry work Thursday afternoon, maneuvering through trail obstacles and then work a cow or open work. On Friday morning beginning at 8 a.m. a series of contests are offered that are useful for buyers, but also entertaining for visitors. This year 103 geldings are listed in the buyer's catalog. In 2013 83 geldings were sold at an average price of $6,454.22. The 36th Annual Stock Dog Sale is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Don Smith Pavilion. There are 20 working dogs listed in this year's catalog. A year ago 15 dogs were sold at an average price of $4,310. The Champion Stock Dog was HH Amazing Grace, with consignor Mason Winebarger from Prineville, Ore. The dog was purchased by Larry Lanzon of Turlock. The dogs work outside 1 p.m. Wednesday and then inside 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Consignors at the three sales represent California, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Colorado, New York and Oklahoma. One consignor even hails from Italy. At the heart of it all is the bull sale, entering its 73rd year, and scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Don Smith Pavilion at the Tehama District Fairgrounds. There are 431 bulls listed in this year's consignment catalog. A year ago 378 bulls were sold for an average price of $3,237.04. The highest selling bull was the Champion Hereford M Maximum Return from the Willows consignor Morrell Ranches, which fetched $13,750 from Alan Simonis of Golden S Ranch in Dixon. Across all sales more than $1.2 million changed hands in 2013. Bull sifting begins this morning as the Red Bluff Bull Sale prides itself on selling quality animals. Bulls are sifted for soundness and structure. Each bull is tested for a variety of diseases, are semen tested and come with a health certificate. Profits from the bull sale are used to support cattle and horse industry related causes and agriculture related youth events. The Red Bluff Bull Sale Committee is made up of non-paid volunteers.
