4A – Daily News – Tuesday, February 8, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Obama speaks to Chamber of Commerce WASHINGTON (AP) — Echoing John F. Kennedy, President Barack Obama prodded business leaders Monday to ‘‘ask yourselves what you can do for America,’’ not just for company bottom lines, even as he sought to smooth his uneasy relations with the nation’s corporate execu- tives. Speaking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the president urged the business community to help acceler- ate the slow economic recovery by increasing hir- ing and unleashing some of the $2 trillion piling up on their balance sheets. ‘‘I want to encourage you to get in the game,’’ Obama said. He enumerated new efforts by his administration to improve the nation’s busi- ness infrastructure, spend more to support entrepre- neurs and foster greater innovation. He vowed to address ‘‘a burdensome cor- porate tax code,’’ and go after ‘‘unnecessary and out- dated regulations.’’ But to a polite, subdued audience of about 200 he also offered a stout defense of health care and financial regulation overhauls — two signature administration ini- tiatives that caused some of the most rancorous disputes with the Chamber last year. US to recognize Southern Sudan as independent state in July WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the United States intends to formally recog- nize Southern Sudan as a sovereign, independent state in July. Obama made the announcement Monday in a statement congratulating the people of Southern Sudan for ‘‘a successful and inspir- ing’’ referendum. Election officials said Monday that more than 98 percent of ballots in the Jan. 9 vote were for indepen- dence. That means South Sudan will become the world’s newest country in July. Obama said that after decades of conflict the image of millions of south- ern Sudanese voters decid- ing their own future was an inspiration to the world. He also said it’s another step forward in Africa’s long journey toward justice and democracy. Super Bowl sets record with 111M viewers in US NEW YORK (AP) — For the second year in a row, the Super Bowl has set a record for American televi- sion viewing. The Nielsen Co. said Monday that an estimated 111 million people watched the Green Bay Packers out- last the Pittsburgh Steelers in professional football’s ulti- mate game. That tops the 106.5 million who watched the 2010 game between New Orleans and Indi- anapolis. The series finale of ‘‘M- A-S-H’’ had held the title of the most-watched TV show in the United States for 27 years. It is now No. 3. Fox had the advantage of a game between two of the National Football League’s iconic franchises and, even though it looked like it could be a rout when the Packers took a 21-3 lead, it went down to the final minute and held viewers’ interest. In fact, the most-watched single play of the game was Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s final incomplete pass to Mike Wallace with about a minute to go, according to measure- ments by TiVo Inc., the dig- ital video recorder maker. Google manager freed from Egypt detention CAIRO (AP) — The young Google Inc. execu- tive detained by Egyptian authorities for 12 days said Monday he was behind the Facebook page that helped spark what he called ‘‘the revolution of the youth of the Internet.’’ A U.S.-based human rights group said nearly 300 people have died in two weeks of clashes. Wael Ghonim, a market- ing manager for the Internet company, sobbed through- out an emotional television interview just hours after he was freed as he described EVERYDAY 9:00am to 6:00pm OPEN how he spent 12 days in detention blindfolded while his worried parents didn’t know where he was. He insisted he had not been tor- tured and said his interroga- tors treated him with respect. ‘‘This is the revolution of the youth of the Internet and now the revolution of all Egyptians,’’ he said, adding that he was taken aback when the security forces holding him branded him a traitor. ‘‘Anyone with good intentions is the traitor THE WINDOW & DOOR SHOP “Let us serve you” ★ Sales ★ Installation ★ Custom Doors ★ Pre-Hanging ★ Matching Molding & Trim Packages ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS 1040 B Monroe St., Red Bluff (530) 527-7962 LIC#659256 because being evil is the norm,’’ he said. ‘‘If I was a traitor, I would have stayed in my villa in the Emirates and made good money and said like others, ’Let this country go to hell.’ But we are not traitors,’’ added Ghonim, an Egyptian who oversees Google’s market- ing in the Middle East and Africa from Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates. The protesters have already brought the most sweeping changes since President Hosni Mubarak took power 30 years ago, but they are keeping up the pressure in hopes of achiev- ing their ultimate goal of ousting Mubarak.
