4A Daily News – Thursday, January 23, 2014 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Symphony's Valentine Concert Romeo and Juliet will be present at the North State Symphony's February concerts. In fact, the concert is largely dedicated to the star-crossed lovers. The Symphony will perform music inspired by their story, and William Shakespeare's version of the story itself, as read by four actors is the highlight of the concert. "Music is a big part of Valentine's Day and romance," according to NSS Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett, who will conduct. "In fact, in one play, Shakespeare calls music the 'food of love.' I wanted to bring together a couple of different versions of the Romeo and Juliet story, from different orchestra composers, and then add other music that fits with the passion." The concert includes the most famous musical setting of the Shakespeare story, the tone poem Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky, and a more action-filled version by a later Russian, Serge Prokofiev. "Tchaikovsky ties the lovers' story all together in one piece," noted Pickett. "Prokofiev wrote his as a ballet, with different scenes, so it works perfectly to have our actors introduce the music with short selections from Shakespeare's play." Joining the Symphony's players are four Chico-area actors: Keith Bratton and Simone Kertesz will portray Romeo and Juliet in readings from the Shakespeare play. CSU, Chico faculty member Cynthia Lammel and student Eric Whitacre complete the play reading cast, which Chico Performances Stunt Dog Experience — Crazy Doggy Antics Tuesday, Jan. 28, Premium $28 | Adult $23 | Senior $21 | Student/Child $15 Who doesn't love cute dogs doing great tricks? He is now Music Director of two larger, Midwestern orchestras. Asked for his thoughts, Pickett replied: "in a funny kind of way, I feel the same kind of emotion as is in this music. I have loved making music with the North State Symphony, and am so grateful for our audiences, our musicians, and all the love I've received as Music Director. I'll always treasure the memories, and, just like the music, filled with excitement for my new opportunities, and sadness at leaving." Elko, Nev. — The 30th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering takes place Jan. 27 to Feb. 1 in Elko, Nev. Drawing on three decades of presenting the artistic traditions of ranching and cowboy culture in the American West, the Western Folklife Center will celebrate the 30th Gathering by focusing on the future of rural agricultural communities and the next generation of people who will carry on their artistic traditions and ensure the health and vitality of these communities. The theme of the 30th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is Expressing the Rural West—Into the Future! Through performances of poetry and music, thought-provoking films and fruitful discourse, artists and audiences of all ages will share their art and their opinions on meeting the challenges of rural life in the modern West. The next generation of cowboy artists will present their work and discuss their brand of ranch life—with one hand on the reins and the other on the cell phone. A new gallery exhibition brings together more than 50 talented young leather carvers, rawhide braiders, metal workers and more, all under the age of 40. Several young musicians will take the stage for the first time at the Gathering, including Jessie Veeder, who writes and sings about life on the family ranch in North Dakota, and Caleb Klauder, who taps into his family's Tennessee roots to create music both bittersweet and irresistible. Tickets to the 30th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering can be purchased at www.westernfolklife.org, by calling 775-738-7508, toll-free 888-880-5885, or by stopping in to the Western Folklife Center's ticket office, 501 Railroad Street, Elko. Pushing Boundaries — Expanding Horizons The Janet Turner Print Museum, in collaboration with the University Art Gallery, presents the 10th Biennial Print Competition and Exhibition Monday, Jan. 27 through Saturday, Feb. 22. This year's juror for the competition is Anne Collins Goodyear, co-director for the Bowdoin Museum of Art, former associate curator of prints and draw- ings for the Smithsonian and president of the College Art Association. A juror's talk will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 in Row- land-Taylor Recital Hall with a reception to follow at The Turner. Started in 1995 by The Turner's curator Catherine 604 Main St. Red Bluff (530) 529-5154 Sullivan, the National Print Competition and Exhibition was designed to raise the visibility of the CSU, Chico Turner Print Museum as a supporter and collector of the best in contemporary printmaking. "As the Turner Print Museum is not geographically close to a major metropolitan area, the exhibition brings fresh art energy to the northern California region, a serious look at the interests of printmakers nationwide and a reflection on the nature of contemporary art and issues," said Sullivan. According to the submission guide, any artist working in and expanding printmaking as an art form is eligible to submit work. Guidelines for submissions require that the works be recent — created within the past two years — and may not have been previously awarded in the competition. The Turner Print Museum is located in CSU, Chico's Meriam Library and is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday during exhibition dates.
