Sharman '80 Stepping Up to Build a Chi Psi Lodge Spotlight on Dennis Coker '89 C hi Psi was a time of growth and opportunity for Dennis Coker '89. The fraternity was a group of brothers who provided the chance to develop leadership skills, make memories, and create friendships that would stand the test of time. "It seemed as if everyone in Chi Psi was really like brothers. There were road trips with brothers to away games and Mardi Gras, organizing great parties and negotiating the best deals for bands as social chairman, participating in almost every intramural sport and being part of the fraternity's intramural soccer team that went undefeated for two years." Dennis returned to campus after graduation and witnessed the Alpha's challenging years. "After my great experiences as a Chi Psi at Ole Miss, it was depressing to see the fraternity slide into the downward spiral it did, and to finally see an empty lot where most of my great college memories started." When approached with the opportunity of a campaign to rebuild the physical structure of Chi Psi, Dennis jumped at the chance. "Building a new Lodge is an absolute must for the long-term viability of Chi Psi at Ole Miss. With the current Alpha being nomads on campus and having no steady place of their own for meetings, initiation ceremonies, and other events, I believe they can only maintain their present momentum for so long. With the strengths of the group just initiated and their desire to improve the image and reputation of fraternities by getting back to the principles Chi Psi was founded on, they can only get better with a Lodge behind them." "This is a chance to actually do what we talked about while we were in school—to build a new, state-of-the-art Lodge that we can be proud of and leverage the recent success and good reputation that the refounding effort and the initiation of 45 outstanding guys has brought us. We can help leave a legacy, giving something back, but also pay it forward at the same time to another group of young men so that they can have the opportunities we did and keep the fraternity moving forward." Dennis makes his home in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Virginia, and children, Anna-Kate and Judson. He works as vice president for Natural Resource Partners, putting together and overseeing acquisitions and equity investments in the construction aggregates and industrial minerals sectors. In his free time, he spends time with his family, watching their sporting activities and enjoys travel, as well as participating in cycling and triathlon events when possible. Dennis can be reached at dfcoker@me.com. "Now's your chance to have that new Lodge we always wanted." The Gamman pg. 2
