BOYS HOOPS Maxwell 59 Mercy 70 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Mercy Warriors came out of the halftime locker room ready to play another half. The Maxwell Panthers didn’t. Mercy used an explosive third quarter, Tuesday, to knock off Maxwell 70-59. The Warriors outscored their visi- tors 24-11 in the third quarter and cruised from there. At halftime it appeared as if the two teams were in the midst of anoth- er thriller, tied up 31-31. The Warriors and Panthers battled for all 32 minutes of last year’s Divi- sion VI section championship and on Jan. 25 went to double-overtime in Maxwell. But the Warriors would have none of it this time, scoring the first eight points of the third quarter and finally finding a way to shut down Maxwell’s Tyler Wells. The Panthers’ center had torched Mercy for 15 points in the first half, but was held to just three points dur- ing the third quarter. Maxwell eventually closed to with- in eight points with 1:27 to remain, but then Mercy’s Mitchell Lopez put the final dagger in the Panthers. With the shot clock expiring, Lopez hit an off-balance 3-pointer to seal the deal as well as cap a 29-point performance. Lopez had strong support. Jeremie Jones powered in 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Isaac Williams added eight points and Michael Wang grabbed 10 boards to go along with seven points. Wells finished with 22 to lead Maxwell. Jacob Newman and Dylan Dewit both added 11. Mercy improved to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in the Tri-Cities League with the win. Maxwell dropped to 13-8 and 5-3 in league play. The Lady Warriors went the entire first period without a field goal and fell behind 8-4. Diana Van Ert finally got something going for Mercy from the field in the second quarter and Mercy came back to grab a 10-8 lead. But the lead wouldn’t last long. Following a Maxwell timeout, the Lady Panthers would go on to score the next 10 points and Mercy never regained the short success they did have. Van Ert finished with 17 points, including 7-for- 8 shooting from the free throw line. Outside of Van Ert, the Lady Warriors only made three field goals. Maxwell was led by Laramie Vargas’ 15-point, 16-rebound performance. The Lady Warriors dropped to 6-15 on the sea- son and 1-7 in the Tri-Cities League. The lone win came at Maxwell, who improved to 8-10 overall and 2-6 in league.
