INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN “When you’re alone and life is making you lonely you can always go ... DOWNTOWN ... When you’ve got worries all the noise and hurry seems to help, I know ... DOWNTOWN.” — Petula Clark, 1965 OMG, I was 16-years-old when that song hit the charts in 1965. It’s timeless. The rhythm, words and message still resonate with me today. It’s true, downtown communities still remain unique and hold a special enchantment in most communities. No matter where you go, every town, city, berg, village and municipality has a signature downtown harboring a special message and atmosphere that radiates its history, realities, traditions and excitement for all those who venture there. Many of our readers are new to the Fayetteville/ Fort Bragg area and are searching for that fun, exciting and unique experience. Well, it’s in Historic Downtown Fayetteville. Believe me, you won’t fi nd it at the food court in the mall or sitting on a bench waiting for your number to be called out at Chili’s, the Outback Steakhouse or the Olive Garden. Shopping malls, box stores and chain restaurants with their redundant fl ashing lights and cookie cutter menus do not defi ne the warmth and humanity of any community. And, it surely doesn’t defi ne ours. You want unique, local and exciting? You want great shopping, local dining experiences, art, culture and nightlife? Look to Historic Downtown Fayetteville. Believe it. Just drive down Hay Street, park your car and walk just a few blocks to experience the “real” Fayetteville, North Carolina. We are a city in transition. And, with each passing day, the nucleus of our county becomes more self suffi cient, more responsive, a more vibrant and exciting destination. Businesses, organizations and agencies are starting to “get it” as the self-serving, do nothing leadership of the past are being kicked to the curb, making way for young, aggressive community leaders who are invested and dedicated business activists and entrepreneurs who have stepped up to replace the “hobbyists” and bureaucrats who have stymied downtown’s development in the past. This new leadership have put their service, money and talent where their hearts are ... in Downtown Fayetteville. We will be showcasing and honoring these people and Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast February 4 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Thursday February 3 Saturday February 5 businesses in future editions. But now, there is no better time to experience Historic Downtown Fayetteville than this month when they will celebrate Valentine’s Day. And, since Valentine’s Day is on a Monday it looks like they are gearing up for a Friday to Monday four-day celebration. Great idea! Why abbreviate a good thing? If you have not experienced our “new” Downtown, then come on down. t Enjoy the city’s sights and sounds, meet the people, have a drink, shop the shops, take in a movie, have a quick snack or a full course intimate dinner or enjoy a fresh cup of coffee and desert. Have it your way. p h I guarantee you an experience you’ll never forget and you will return. In this issue, there is a complete listing of downtown Valentine events, businesses and organizations ready to “rock and roll” your world and welcome you to the real Fayetteville. Each event and venue is also included in our online edition at www.upandcomingweekly.com and linked directly to their website for more insight and information. As Fayetteville and Cumberland County’s community newspaper, it is our job to report and showcase the “best of the best” in our community for residents and readers. Well folks, in this issue we are showcasing those people, businesses and organizations dedicated to developing our downtown and raising our quality of life. Support them and watch as these people, businesses and organizations continue to unite, develop and expand their infl uence on the betterment and direction of our inner city. Remember what Petula Clark had to say about it: “And you may fi nd somebody kind to help and understand you Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to guide them along So maybe I’ll see you there. We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares So go, DOWNTOWN; things will be great when you’re DOWNTOWN don’t wait a minute for DOWNTOWN; everything’s waiting for you.” BILL BOWMAN, Publisher See ya there!
