Taking care of your bike during these months are an invest- ment. If you don’t run your bike often and you let it set it will cause you problems sooner or later. To help you keep your bike going here are a few tips. • Gas goes bad. Treat your fuel system with fuel stabilizer and run the engine long enough to get it com- pletely through the carbure- tor. Then, either fill up the gas tank to full with gas or drain all of the gas out of the tank. If you drain it spray some gas soluble oil on the inside of the tank. This will keep the tank from rusting. • Drain all the gas out of the carburetors. Most carbu- retors have a drain screw on the bottom of the carburetors. • Take the battery out Good maintenance is important to keep your bike running smoothly. and if necessary add distilled water to it and clean off the outside and don’t forget to clean the battery box and clean the cables. Put the battery on a trickle charger. It costs a bit more, but you can get a trickle charger that will shut off automatically when the battery is fully charged. You can leave it connected and on all the time. • Release some of the air pressure from the tires but not all of the way. • Change the engine oil and oil filter. • Change ALL other oils and fluids, such as rear end oil, radiator fluid, brake fluid, etc. • If you change the fluid in your bike’s radiator, use distilled water and a motorcycle type anti-freeze. Car type anti-freezes use additives that can wear out your water pump. • If you change your brake or clutch fluid, use the type recommended for your system. • Wash and dry your bike, then add a cloth of wax. • Aluminum does rust (more like pits), so apply a spray wax to all surfaces of the engine. My favorite cleaner is Honda Spray Cleaner & Polish. • Use some kind of Armor All type preservative on all plastic and rubber parts. • Use a breathable motorcycle cover to keep dust and moisture off your bike. Plastic tarps that don’t breath trap moisture in and can cause rust. • Keep the bike in a dry, heated garage, if possible. • Keep it in the dark. Sunlight thru a window can fade paint. • Once a month or so, turn the engine over a couple of times, to keep things moving! For more tips check your owner’s manual or your local dealership. A little preventive maintenance will take you a long way on your next ride. If there is a topic that you would like to discuss you can contact me at mo- torcycle4fun@aol.com. RIDE SAFE!
