4A – Daily News – Tuesday, January 11, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Shooting suspect appears in court PHOENIX (AP) — The nation got its first look on Monday at the 22-year-old loner accused of trying to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Jared Loughner, head shaved, a cut above the right temple and his hands cuffed, scanned a packed courtroom and sat down. His attorney, who defended Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and ‘‘Unabomber’’ Ted Kaczynski, whispered to him. The judge asked Lough- ner if he understood that he could get life in prison — or the death penalty — for killing federal Judge John Roll, one of the six who died in the shooting rampage at Giffords’ meeting with con- stituents on Saturday in Tuc- son. ‘‘Yes,’’ he said, standing at a lecturn in his beige prison jumpsuit. A U.S. marshal stood guard nearby. The judge ordered Loughner held without bail. Giffords still in critical condition TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Doctors treating Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said Monday the congress- woman was responding to verbal commands by raising two fingers of her left hand and even managed to give a thumbs-up. Giffords, 40, is in critical condition in the intensive Jared Loughner care unit of Tucson’s Uni- versity Medical Center after she was shot through the head Saturday during a meet-and-greet with voters outside a supermarket. Two patients were discharged Sunday night. Eight others, including Giffords, remained hospitalized. Recent CAT scans showed no further swelling in the brain, but doctors were guarded. ‘‘We’re not out of the woods yet,’’ said her neuro- surgeon Dr. Michael Lemole. ‘‘That swelling can sometimes take three days or five days to maximize. But every day that goes by and we don’t see an increase, we’re slightly more optimistic.’’ After Saturday’s opera- tion to temporarily remove half of her skull, doctors over the past two days had Giffords removed from her sedation and then asked basic commands such as: ‘‘Show me two fingers.’’ Giffords moderation e-mail LOUISVILLE, Ky. DeLay gets 3 years prison AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A judge ordered former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to serve three years in prison Monday for his role in a scheme to ille- gally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002. The sentence comes after a jury in November convict- ed DeLay on charges of money laundering and con- spiracy to commit money laundering. The Republican who represented the Houston area was once one of the most powerful people in U.S. politics, ascending to the No. 2 job in the House of Representatives. During a several-minute statement to the judge prior to sentenc- ing, DeLay repeated his longstanding claims that the prosecution was politically motivated and that he never intended to break the law. ‘‘I can’t be remorseful for something I don’t think I did,’’ DeLay said.
