Thursday Boys Hoops — Corning Shootout Durham vs. Corning, 6:30 p.m. Soccer — West Valley at Corning, 3:15 p.m. GoDaddy.com Bowl — Middle Tenn. vs Miami (Ohio), 5 p.m., ESPN NBA — Thunder at Mavericks, 5:15 p.m., TNT NBA — Nuggets at Kings, 7:30 p.m., TNT Sports 1B Thursday January 6, 2011 Harbaugh to meet with 49ers Tehama Tracker BOYS HOOPS San Francisco 49ers SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh was meeting Wednesday with the San Francisco 49ers about their head coach vacancy, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the interview wasn’t made public. Harbaugh returned Tuesday night to the Bay Area from a 40-12 Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech in Miami that gave the Cardinal a program-best 12-1 record. He now must weigh his options, which appear to be many. The 49ers formally picked Trent Baalke as their new general manag- er Tuesday night and he is now looking for the coach to replace Mike Singletary, fired following a 25-17 loss at St. Louis on Dec. 26 that eliminated San Francisco from the playoffs for an eighth straight season. Baalke had been the team’s vice president of player personnel since March. Team President and CEO Jed York said after Singletary was fired that he would leave the choice of head coach up to the new GM — so apparently this is Baalke’s show to try to land Harbaugh. Though it might take a tag-team effort by the front office considering Harbaugh’s numerous suitors. The 47-year-old Harbaugh is 58- 27 overall as a college coach and 29-21 in four seasons at Stanford. He took over a 1-11 team when he was hired in December 2006 and quickly turned the program back into a winner and bowl contender. The Cardinal went 4-8 in his first season, 5-7 the next, then improved to 8-5 and earned a Sun Bowl berth in 2009 — the school’s first bowl appearance since 2001. Many believe Harbaugh is ready to make the leap to the next level, eager for a new challenge. He was the Oakland Raiders’ quarterbacks coach from 2002-03 before spend- ing three seasons as head coach at the University of San Diego. When Stanford arrived back on campus Tuesday, one man hollered ‘‘Stay in the Bay Area!’’ when Har- baugh hopped off the bus holding his toddler daughter, Addison. Harbaugh, a college star at Michigan where there also is a coaching vacancy, played 15 sea- sons in the NFL for the Bears, Colts, Ravens, Chargers and Pan- thers. A first-round draft pick taken 26th overall by Chicago in 1987, Harbaugh completed 2,305 of 3,918 passes for 26,288 career yards and 129 touchdowns in the NFL. He also ran for 18 TDs. Aside from his alma mater, the Miami Dolphins and Denver Bron- cos are teams believed to have interest in Harbaugh. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, CEO Mike Dee and general manager Jeff Ire- land were on the Stanford sideline before Monday’s Orange Bowl game. ‘‘When you have a bunch of bil- lionaires chasing you around to be a part of an NFL program ... If Jim feels like he’s ready for that, who would blame him?’’ Michigan ath- letic director Dave Brandon said. Messages left for Harbaugh’s agent, Jack Bechta, weren’t imme- diately returned Wednesday. The 49ers — who were picked to win the NFC West this year but haven’t had a winning season since their last playoff season in 2002 — also were scheduled to interview Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson on Wednesday about the coaching job. San Francisco was given permission Tuesday from Oakland to talk to Jackson. The Newark Star-Ledger also reported that San Francisco request- ed permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. If Fewell or Jackson interview, the team will have fulfilled the require- ment under the Rooney Rule to talk to a minority candidate. Jackson also could be a candi- date for the head coaching job in Oakland after owner Al Davis decided not to exercise the team’s option to retain Tom Cable. The Raiders informed Cable of their decision Tuesday. Redding show has local talent Local Mixed Martial Arts team, "Team Intense" has two fighters fighting Saturday, Jan. 15 at Vision Quest Cage Fights II being held at the Win-River Casino in Redding. Ashton Peirce a 155-pounder will be making his MMA debut. Team owner and coach, Sam Sleezer, a former professional MMA fighter, has high hopes for Peirce. "He's well rounded and very strong with excellent striking and submission skills. When we go to other local gyms for sparing he's miles ahead of anyone near his weight class.,” Sleezer said. “He's new to MMA — only training for about a year — but his skills are those of a seasoned pro.” Scot Myers who's had a great amateur career, winning the heavyweight title, will make his professional debut. Myers who recently took his fathers last name, Davenport, looks to start a new chapter in his MMA career. “Scot is one of those smaller heavyweights who out quicks most guys,” Sleezer said. “Scot's got huge punching power with great submission skills. The pro- fessional game changes some Ashton Peirce allowing elbows, which should give Scot more opportunities to punish his opponent.” Scot Myers Davenport To train with or for more infor- mation about Team Intense call 990-6171. Corning Hot Shots win championship Corning 62 Orland 61 The Cardinals pulled out a 62-61 win at Orland, Tuesday, to improve to 8-4 as they head into today’s Corning Shootout. Corning had fallen victim to Orland on Dec. 17 at Colusa’s Tournament. The Cardinals open up their tournament at 6:30 p.m. today with a first round game against Durham. Mercy 49 Liberty Christian 72 A third meeting with Liberty Christian unfortunately ended the same as the first two for the Warriors, Tuesday, as the Patriots handed Mercy a 72-49 loss. Mercy coach Steve Shellabarger said his team competed for all 32 minutes and played well defensively despite the score. Liberty Christian made nine 3-pointers in the game, all of which were contested. Mercy meanwhile saw several shots rim in and out. “We attacked them and played our butts off,” Shellabarg- er said. “We got beat by a team that shot better than we did.” Royce Crane led Mercy with 17 points. Jeremie Jones had 10 points and eight rebounds. Michael Wang added eight points and eight rebounds. Mitchell Lopez had eight assists. GIRLS HOOPS Red Bluff 44 Chico 75 The Lady Spartans lost their Eastern Athletic League opener 75-44 on the road at Chico, Tuesday. Red Bluff fell to 3-6 on the season as Jordan Mootz led the Lady Panthers with 20 points. A 19-5 Chico advantage in the second quarter doomed the Lady Spartans. Orland 53 Corning 52 Unlike the Corning boys, the Lady Cardinals found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-point game, Tuesday night, falling to Orland 53-52. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 8-8 on the season and host Yuba City on Jan. 11. Mercy 27 Liberty Christian 67 Lacy Asdourin scored 18 points to lead Liberty Christian past Mercy 67-27, Tuesday night in the Tri-Cities League opener for both teams. Alomar and Blyleven elected to Hall of Fame NEW YORK (AP) — Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven became Hall of Famers on Wednesday, the two- time World Series champions easily elected after narrow misses last year. Sluggers Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire, Jeff Bag- well and Juan Gonzalez came nowhere close. Hall voters, for now, seem intent to prevent the cloud of the Steroids Era from covering Cooperstown. Alomar was picked on 90 percent of the ballots by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. The 12-time All-Star won a record 10 Gold Gloves at second base, hit .300 and helped the Toronto Blue Jays win titles in 1992- 93. Blyleven was picked on 79.7 percent — it takes 75 per- cent to reach the shrine. The great curveballer won 287 games, threw 60 shutouts and is fifth with 3,701 strikeouts. This was his 14th time on the ballot and his career stats have gotten a boost in recent years by sabermetricians who have new ways to evaluate baseball numbers. Alomar and Blyleven will be joined by Pat Gillick at the induction ceremonies July 24 in Cooperstown. The longtime executive was picked last month by the Veterans Committee. Gillick helped earn his place with a trade that brought Alomar to Toronto.
