Thursday, January 6, 2011 – Daily News – 3B World Briefing 112th Congress called to order WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly elected speaker John Boehner hailed the Republican Party’s return to control of the House Wednesday, vowing a more open legislative process but acknowledging that ‘‘a great deal of scar tissue has built up on both sides of the aisle.’’ GOP lawmakers, who picked up 64 House seats in the November elections, cheered loudly when Boehner defeated Democrat Nancy Pelosi in the roll call for speaker. The veter- an Ohio lawmaker’s rise to the speakership was virtually guar- anteed by his party’s midterm triumphs, which ended Pelosi’s four-year reign. The new Senate also con- vened Wednesday, with Vice President Joe Biden administer- ing the oath to lawmakers he had campaigned for and against last fall. Senators moved quick- ly to a debate over filibuster rules, with Democratic and Republican leaders accusing each other of obstructing progress and trying to game the parliamentary system. But most eyes were on the House, where the new GOP majority has vowed to battle President Barack Obama on health care, spending, taxes and other issues. Boehner, the perpetually tanned legislator who rose, fell and rose again in Republican leadership contests over the past two decades, told a packed chamber that Congress must tackle tough issues such as cut- ting spending and reducing the deficit. Police detain man holed up inside eatery CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — An armed man involved in a standoff with Arizona authori- ties at a Phoenix suburban shopping center was in custody after surrending to police on Wednesday, and authorities were searchng the mall for another possible suspect, offi- cials said. Police did not immediately identify the man in custody or the possible second suspect. The situation unfolded just after noon when undercover Chandler police were involved in a shooting with a robbery suspect. Police quickly evacu- ated the mall after the shooting, and there were no reports of injuries. The scene later moved from the mall to a Baja Fresh fast food restaurant where armed Chandler police dressed with body armor and helmets stood behind vehicles and with guns aimed at the restaurant. The suspect surrendered Wednes- day afternoon. Witness Katie Corbin, who was inside Chandler Fashion Center at the time of the mid- day shooting, told KTVK-TV that people went to the back of the Victoria’s Secret store after shots were fired. The upscale shopping center includes a Banana Republic, Coach, Nordstrom and other stores. Student opens fire at Omaha school, wounds 2 OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A student opened fire at an Omaha high school on Wednes- day wounding two adults including the principal and causing students to rush to a school kitchen to take cover, authorities said. Later, the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Robert Butler, Jr., was found dead in car about a mile away from the school after shooting himself, Omaha police chief Alex Hayes said. It was not immediately clear why Butler, a son of an Omaha police detective, shot Millard High School Principal Curtis Case and Vice Principal Vicki Kasper. Case was in stable condition and Kasper was in critical con- dition at an area hospital, the chief told reporters. A 16-year-old student at the school told The Associated Press she was just beginning lunch when a school adminis- trator came into the cafeteria.
