COMMUNITY NEWS Library Upgrade Gives Access to Millions of Items Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center will join NC Cardinal, a state wide partnership of 19 libraries that share catalogs and lending of materials. NC Cardinal will provide Cumberland County residents with access to more than three million items within the system. As part of the upgrade, the library's catalog will not be updated from Dec. 9 – 11 and there will be a disruption in access to the catalog and customer accounts. Customers may browse the catalog, but they will not be able to reserve or renew materials on their account. To verify if items are available for checkout, please contact library staff. Once the transition is complete on Dec. 12, customers will gain the ability to reserve materials online either through Cumberland County or from any of the libraries using NC Cardinal. "NC Cardinal will greatly expand our customers' ability to find materials outside of our collection, with the State Library picking up the initial cost for this project," said Library Director Jody Risacher. Access to popular items such as best sellers will be limited to Cumberland County residents. To search materials in the NC Cardinal system, customers will select participating libraries from a drop down menu. Requested items will be delivered to the designated local branch. Items may also be returned at any participating NC Cardinal library. Items checked out through Cumberland County are subject to the library's lending policies, including fines and fees. Interlibrary loan will continue to provide access to materials in libraries that are not a part of NC Cardinal. This project is made possible by funding from the State Library of North Carolina. Low Income Energy Assistance Available The Cumberland County Department of Social Services wants citizens interested in receiving help with their heating costs during the cold winter months to be aware of the application process and eligibility requirements for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), a federally-funded program that provides for a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills. Priority will be given to households with an elderly member age 60 and above, or a disabled person receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services. Applications for these priority households will be accepted Dec. 2 through Jan. 31 or until funds are exhausted. Applications for all other households will be accepted Feb. 3- March 31 or until funds are exhausted. All households must apply for LIEAP; there are no automatic approvals. Household income must not exceed 130 percent of the poverty level. The Salvation Army manages this program for DSS and all applications must go to the Salvation Army office at 1047 Southern Ave. Hours are MondayFriday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information, contact the DSS LIEAP message line at (910) 6772821 or the Salvation Army at (910) 307-0359.
