Local Riders Earn Iron Butt Designation by JIM JONES DECEMBER 6 •LEGEND'S PUB 17TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY at Legend's Pub. Call 867-2364 for more information. Local riders earn Iron Butt Award in honor of POW/MIA. My friend Agnes Rodriguez (Sassy) and her husband, Hector, are avid Harley Davidson riders. They recently earned the title of the Iron Butt Rider from the Iron Butt Association. I asked Agnes to share their experiences with us about their adventures. UCW: What is the Iron Butt Association? Agnes: The Iron Butt Association is an international organization dedicated to safe, long-distance motorcycle riding. UCW: Why did you decide to do it? Agnes: We did our first Iron Butt ride on Aug. 3, but it was not recognized by the IBA, due to circumstances out of our control and because two members of our six pack could not attend, so we planned our second attempt for Sept. 2. We also dedicated our ride to those who would like to ride but can't ... The POW/ MIA. UCW: What did you have to do to achieve this? Agnes: We went to www.ironbutt.com and read all of the steps required. We had to plan our to and from route. The most important thing we had to do was to ride 1,000 miles in less than 24 hours and keep track of all the mileage. After we returned, completed and printed all of the paperwork and submitted it back to the association. We had to save all of our receipts to prove our routes. UCW: What was the hardest part of this adventure? Agnes: The hardest part was completing the run which was 1,000 miles in less than 24 hours without any sleep. We had to prepare our mind and body for the challenge. We had no alcohol, no caffeine, no fatty foods, etc. We found that good things to take on the trip were water, Gatorade, almonds, bananas and sour candy. UCW: What was the best part of the trip? Agnes: Meeting our objective in 19 hours. I was the only female rider, and I had driven two, 1,000 mile rides within 30 days. UCW: Who went on the ride with you? Agnes: Wilfedo Torres (Skull), Jackie Torres (Meduza), Louis Ortiz (Papito), Nancy Ortiz (Mamita), Hector Rodriguez (Smoke), Rudy Hendrick and myself. UCW: Where did you start and turn around? Agnes: On the first ride we went to Philadelphia, Pa., and the second one we went to Miami, Fla. UCW: How long did you take for breaks? Agnes: All of our breaks were about 15 minutes long and our big stop was in Daytona. We were there for about 40 minutes tops. UCW: Did everyone make it? Agnes: Yes, everyone did make it. We started at 8:20 a.m. and returned back to Fayetteville at 2:30 a.m. the following morning, safe and sound. Then we had breakfast at Denny's. One word of caution, don't let yourself get over-tired and fall asleep. These events are hard on a person both physically and mentally. There is no patch worth risking your life over.
