Fayetteville State University Welcomes Take Six a STAFF REPORT Fayetteville State University's Fine Arts Series welcomes Take Six to Seabrook Auditorium on Dec. 8. Like many universities, Fayetteville State University is a place of learning that promotes growth in its students as well as the community around it. One such way that FSU keeps its intellectual market-place stimulated is by providing many different opportunities for unique experiences to the students and the community. The Fine Arts Series sponsored by FSU is designed to expand the viewer's cultural understanding. Inarguably, math and science are important windows into understanding the world, but art provides a unique look into another person's life that increases interpersonal understanding and can make for a better world. The upcoming installment of the Fine Arts Series is a concert presented in partnership with WFSS 91.9 FM. Music as a medium spans the globe and the centuries. It is a defining aspect of humanity, and a tool that allows a unique form of storytelling. Music shares emotions and stories through more than just words, and this can often have a deeply moving effect. The group that will be sharing their stories is the highly acclaimed group Take Six. Take Six is documented as the most awarded vocal group in history. They have received 10 Grammys, 10 Dove Awards, a Soul Train Award and several other distinguished honors. Take Six has also played many prestigious shows such as performing at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards with and while honoring Ben E. King. The group was originally formed in 1980 in Huntsville, Ala. Claude McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman's Estate Quarter while attending Oakwood College in Alabama. The group now includes McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joe Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley. The only change from the original college group is the introduction of Dentley after Cedric Dent retired from touring and took a position at Tennessee State University and of course the name change. As an a capella group, it is the voices alone of these men that must capture the meaning of the music. Take Six goes a step beyond and is a unique mixture of several different musical styles, which shows the incredible talent of these artists. They infuse their music with the grooves indicative of funk, the passion of gospel, the rhythm of jazz, and the excitement of R&B and pop. The music they produce knows no bounds and has components to appeal to every ear. The concert at FSU will have all of the usual passion and excitement that they put into every show with a hint of holiday flavor. What better way to start the holiday season than to enjoy illustrious voices performing music strongly based on friendship? The joy and beauty of this music can bring the holiday spirit to life in anyone. Take Six will performat FSU on Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. in Seabrook Auditorium. Seabrook Auditorium is at the corner of Murchison Road and W.T. Brown Drive. Admission is $20. For more information on the concert visit www.uncfsu.edu/arts/fine-arts-series or call 672-1571.
