2B – Daily News – Saturday, December 25, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Celebrate the Light A winter Vacation Bible School will be held starting Monday, Dec. 27, through Fri., Dec. 31, for all ages — preschool, elementary, teens and adults. There will be study groups for each age group. Children younger than 5 must be accompanied by an adult; all par- ents and grandparents are welcome to take part. The theme for the week is Celebrate the Light. “We will be vacationing at the Bethlehem Inn in the year of the Lord’s birth with song, drama, crafts, games, lessons and food,” said Director Suzanne Calhoun. For more information, call Calhoun at 527-5378 or send an e-mail to s-c-w-calhouns@att.net. Voices of faith: How do I learn how to pray? CONNECTING WITH GOD The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza: Effec- tive prayer is not begging a higher deity to give us some- thing good, take away something bad or make something happen. Prayer is acknowledging the power you have to establish well-being in your life. Jesus said, "When you pray, believe you already have what it is you desire and it will be yours." I don't believe he meant this in a material sense wherein we could pray for a new car, believe we have received it and see it show up in our driveway. Prayer is of a spiritual nature and provides in a spiritual way. If you are going through difficult times, in your prayers affirm you have the strength to make it, and that strength will be yours. If you are experiencing conflict in a relation- ship, affirm that you have the compassion to forgive, and forgiveness will be yours. If you are facing great fears, anx- iety and stress about the future, in your prayers affirm that you have the peace, confidence and faith to move beyond the fears — peace, confidence and faith will be yours. You have everything you need to live a comfortable and fulfilling life. When situations disrupt your well-being, prayer is simply sitting quietly, connecting with God's mind, affirming you have what you need and then giving gratitude for what you have affirmed. AWARENESS FROM THE HEART The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nevada, Mo., and St. Bridget's, Rich Hill, Mo.: In the 1936 movie, "San Francisco," a grateful survivor of the recent earthquake tells a young priest, "I want to thank God. What do I say?" The response: "Just say what's in your heart." A good line, yet how many of us are out of touch with what is truly going on in our hearts? Everyone is learning how to pray. We cannot describe it as we would automobile competency: "I know how to drive" versus "I am learning to drive." Every prayer is learn- ing and never completely in the know. This is because prayer involves an openness to God's will in my life and a humble awareness that I can resist these movements of grace. Prayer offers a malleable heart to God. This means having an awareness that I am not alone and that my creator — God — is concerned for me. The revela- tion of Jesus Christ uniquely manifests God's love for us. When asked by his disciples how to pray, Jesus' response — the Lord's Prayer — reveals the qualities of prayer: acknowledgement that God is holy and his will should be sought, requests for life's necessities, forgiveness and salva- tion from evil. Sonship — It’s the real deal A few years ago my wife and I had the joy of adopting three beautiful chil- dren into our family. We had three wonderful kids already so this expo- nential growth brought some chal- lenges. The children had been through so much in their short little lives, we weren’t sure what to expect. No matter what, my wife and I loved them and we were determined to provide for them, to protect them and give them an identity as members of our family. Soon the eldest of the three, my son, began struggling at mealtime. He wasn’t just being picky; the foods he once devoured suddenly made him "gag". This "gagging" went to an extreme, even to vomiting on the din- ner table. I had never experienced any- thing like it in all my years of raising children. My wife and I wondered if he was ill and needed a doctor? Was it a control issue featuring a four-year- old boy taking us on and showing us who’s boss? It all runs through your head. One night at dinner I was at the point of pulling my hair out. Suddenly I felt the Lord had given me wisdom and understanding to talk to him. I knew it was God because I was peace- ful and compassionate after the boy had single handedly, or I should say with a single bite, cleared the table and destroyed the appetites of the entire family! I spoke with my son about having a puppy and if you loved the puppy would you give it a name? "Yea" he replied. I went on to ask him, "If the puppy was cold, would you give him a blan- ket?" "If the puppy was hungry, what would you do?" We walked through this conversation and I heard the typi- cal one word answers I had come to expect from him (he is a boy of few words, well, at least he was then!). Bottom line, even as a four year old boy, if you love the puppy you do whatever it takes to care for it because you love it! I expressed to him that Mommy and Daddy loved him just like he would love a puppy, even more. "We want to feed you, we want to buy you clothes, we want to give you a nice bed to sleep in," I continued, "because we love you." I explained that he wasn’t letting us love him when he wouldn’t eat. I reiterated the love we had for him and how we wanted to pro- vide, protect and give him our name because we loved him. Now, psycho- analyze this if you want but what happened was incred- ible. We got him cleaned up, he ate his dinner and it has never happened again. Three years have passed and by the grace of God he is thriving! In 1 Samuel 18 we find Jonathan Mike Sharp GodTalk there is more (as if that’s not enough!). It’s about relationship. We hear it all the time but fail to understand the depth of what is offered. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). He has offered an eternal covenant of love con- taining all provision. He tells us not to worry, as our needs are met in Matthew 6. We read of His faithfulness to the Children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. We have the promise of covenant pro- tection; He is our shelter and strong tower (Psalm 61:3). We know that by the Spirit of Adoption we have a Father in Heaven (Rom 8:14-16). We are children of God! The Word is full of great and precious promises that we have "union of being" with God and share in His divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). and David making a covenant, a covenant of love. Jonathon is the son of the king; David a keeper of sheep. Jonathan has everything; David, the youngest of eight, has nothing; yet Jonathan loved David and longed to share everything with him. He offers this covenant, this sharing of a com- mon life, by giving to him his gar- ments (provision) and weapons (pro- tection). Jonathan even gives him his robe, the symbol of his identity as the King’s son. By the blood of Jesus Christ we have "remission" of sins; we are for- given and released from the bondage of sins (Matt 26:28, Heb. 9:22) but I no longer see, "Be ye Holy, for I am Holy" (Lev. 11:44, 1 Pet. 1:16) as a commandment; It is a proclamation of who I am in Christ through a covenant- relationship in the blood of Jesus Christ. He is my provision, He is my protection, and He is my identity, the Son of the Living God, my Lord, my God, my King! Mike Sharp is ordained with Church of God, Cleveland, Tenn. He is the Senior Pastor at Harvest Christian Center in Corning. Mike is passionate about the Word of God and proclaiming its truths. He and Stephanie have been married since 2000.
