2A – Daily News – Saturday, December 25, 2010 Community people&events The soundness of faith The twenty- fifth day of December brings forth the acknowledge- ment of faith. Christians cele- brate Christmas throughout the world. Their faith is based on the birth of Jesus and the acknowl- edgment of his deity. Faith in God is ever in the minds of many. Interestingly, the following phrase of folk wisdom was phrased by an unknown Arabic; "The strength of the heart comes from the soundness of the faith." Perhaps Dec. 25 is the time to take a look at our faith; is it strong, is it weak, do we believe and practice our faith? Do we recognize the times when we neglect the nurturing of our faith? All are questions for the New Year coming up. Enjoy this Christmas Day, overlook unexpected problems, concentrate on the positive, eliminate the negative and have a wonderful time. During these times of recession, many families are unable to exchange gifts as they struggle to meet their min- imal demands they are sometimes sad. I remember such a time in our family. As Christmas approached we found no money to buy a Christmas tree and very little to secure tiny presents for others. As the days went by we pon- dered the absence of a tree. One day a thought came to mind that perhaps a Manzanita bush might suffice. A red Manzanita bush appeared in our living room. The ques- tion now was; how do we decorate it. We searched and found a box of blue Christmas tree balls they looked pretty good on the bush in front of the living room window. We could not afford to buy a string of tree lights. We dug into our pockets and finally found enough small change to purchase a small elec- tric spot light to shine on the bush. Wow! What a beautiful site. The chil- dren were impressed and even though they are now grown, they speak of that wonderful bush Christmas tree. During the Depression times count- less Americans suffered through lack of work, lack of food, lack of housing or lack of money. It was during those times that Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of then President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, made a statement; "…the Depression is not problems of economics alone but of confidence and spirit. I ran across a picture of the Roosevelt Fam- ily, children and grandchildren in front of a Christmas tree adorned with silver icicles, they all had ordinary pleasure on their faces much like families everywhere. Eleanor, their Grand- mother was a keeper of faith. The Depression and World War II called on Americans to be brave and patriotic and to work tirelessly and unselfishly for the national cause. Eleanor Roosevelt was an inspira- tional example. Mrs. Roosevelt gave energy to the nation. It seems that he continued to have faith in keeping the country going in spite of hard times. Today we must acknowledge that the economics of this time called Recession is as hurtful to some fami- lies as was the Great Depression. The reminder of folk wisdom as follows: "The strength of the heart comes from the soundness of the faith." Feed your faith and lift your spirit. Santa Stuck In Mud Creates Emergency Had it not been for the fact that Santa Claus is twins ... there would have been an aching vacancy on the program at the Christmas entertainment at the Presbyterian church last night. ... The program started and Santa came not. A great emergency existed. John Sweeney was roped and branded for the job ... In the meantime J.B. Roxborough, who drives an oil truck for the American Oil Company, who had made elaborate preparations to delight the kiddies and thrill the old folks (as Santa) was stuck in a mud hole away out in the country. — Daily News, Dec. 25, 1920 Oh Snap!
