PG&E seeks scholarship applicants Pacific Gas and Electric Company's 10 Employee Resource Groups are accepting applications from college-bound high school students as well as college students who may qualify for scholarships of up to $6,000 in 2014. Every year, the ERGs award scholarships to help defray the increasing cost of higher education. At least 100 students in Northern and Central California will receive scholarships of up to $6,000 next year for their excellence in academics, community service and leadership. Complete ERG scholarship information, including criteria and applications, is available on http://www.pge.com/en/about/community/education/er gscholarships/index.page. To apply for a scholarship, students must submit a general and supplemental application. To be considered for a scholarship, all applications must be submitted by Feb. 16, 2014. In 2013, employee groups distributed a record $319,000 in scholarships — surpassing the previous high of $302,000 in 2012 — to 175 deserving students. The awards help start a family legacy of pursuing higher education as many recipients are the first in their families to attend college. Since 1989, PG&E has given more than $3.5 million in scholarships. The funds come from employee contributions, fundraising events and Campaign for the Community, the company's charitable giving program. "The scholarships help recognize and honor the work students are doing in their schools and communities," said PG&E Director of Performance, Selection and Inclusion Joyce Ibardolasa, who's also Employee Community Fund (ECF) board president. ECF is the umbrella charitable organization that provides governance for the ERG scholarships. Salisbury students giving back to community Students from Reach, a 9th and 10th grade program that is part of Salisbury High School, worked at the Lift Tehama event at the Tehama District Fairground Nov. 15. Student Ashley Thompson and her foster mother, Paula Layson, were the driving force behind getting the students involved in this project. Paula and her sister, Judy Mandolfo, have been involved in Recycle the Warmth for 10 years and they say they have been called to give back to the community and people in need because they grew up in need themselves. Recycle the Warmth became part of Lift Tehama last year. The event relies on many volunteers to be a success. Ashley spoke to Judy Spencer, the Reach teacher, and asked whether it was possible for the class to get involved this year. Students were responsible for showing clients around the fairgrounds and getting them to different stations such as mental health information, flu shots, eye exams, pet care, getting IDs, and bike safety.
