Cal Delta News Views & For Alumni and Friends of the California Delta Chapter No. 17 • Fall 2013 San Diego State University, Sigma Phi Epsilon information www.cadeltaalumni.org Cal Delta Shines at 2013 Conclave in Dallas S Chapter Wins Fourth Successive Silver Buchanan Cup igEp celebrated the 53rd Grand Chapter Conclave, July 31 to August 4, in Dallas. By any measure, it was a huge success for CA Delta. CA Delta celebrated that we had one of the largest contingents from around the country, with 24 undergraduate men in attendance. The active members enjoyed the company of Bob Trovaten '67, Skip Dahlkamp '64, Bob Gibbs '63, and Ron Smith '69. Also joining the group were former CA Delta Faculty Fellow (now a Ph.D. student at ASU) Lori Bednarchik and current Faculty Fellow and SDSU School of Business Asst. Dean Christine Probett. A major highlight of the trip was the Balanced Man Celebration. This is the night when the Buchanan Cups are awarded to the best chapters in the nation in recognition of their outstanding performance in all aspects of college fraternity life. This includes scholarship, leadership, community service, brother development, alumni relations, and sound financial stewardship. This year, SigEp awarded 40 cups, 10 of which were gold. Silver cups are awarded to those chapters that show excellence for one, two, three, or four Conclave two-year cycles. When a chapter has won four successive silver cups, the fifth cup, making a total of 10 consecutive years of excellence, is gold. CA Delta won its fourth consecutive silver Buc Cup and has high ambitions of winning gold in Nashville in 2015. Balanced Man Celebration The Balanced Man Celebration was a gala event, held in a very large convention room with nearly 1,400 people. Two narrators were carefully selected from among the best and brightest undergraduates, either from the Ruck Leadership Academy or The Tragos Quest to Greece program. They took turns to announce the award winners and moved the program along. This year, CA Delta was honored for Patrick Gallagher '14 to be a narrator. He was magnificent. We don't think it was just coincidence that, when a narrator announced CA Delta as a recipient, it was Patrick that did the reading. At the brotherhood luncheon, we properly honored our own as they were formally read into SigEp's Chapter Eternal. Those named were Mayo B. Watson '89, George L. Bradbury III '51, John Gallo '62, Fred Hammett '64, Gene Durnal '51, Steven P. Grahn '87, Donnell D. Potter '51, and Chris Blake '88. Please let us know if we missed anyone. We will keep a file that we will take to the 2015 Conclave. At the luncheon, Jeremy Poincenot '13 received the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fellow Award. One of only three granted at this Conclave, Jeremy completed a 500-hour, significant community service/service learning project over a two-year period, benefitting the Doheny Eye Institute and its work to find a cure for Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). On Saturday, the luncheon awards program was directed toward the SigEp Foundation and National Housing Corporation. Major spotlights were shined on housing projects across the country that have significantly improved the living-learning environments for SigEp men on their respective campuses. The Cornerstone Award is given to alumni and volunteer corporations for the completion of outstanding projects. We are proud to share that the CA Delta AVC received one of only two Cornerstone Awards presented at this Conclave. We offer many thanks to our alumni donors and others who supported us during our project. The undergraduate members, alumni supporters, SDSU faculty, and CA Delta parents worked hard over the two-year period preceding this Conclave. You can see by the results that the efforts did not go unrewarded. We are all very proud to be SigEps. (Continued on page 4)
