8A Daily News – Friday, October 11, 2013 Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Feast of St. Francis celebrated Lights On set for October 17 countywide "Ride the Wave to Higher Education" is the Safe Education and Recreation for Rural Families (SERRF) After School Program's theme for the 2013-2014 school year, as well as, Lights On, the national awareness event for after school programs celebrated on Oct. 17. Since 1999, schools and numerous community partners have joined together to implement high quality after school services tailored to the needs of the students, parents, and community members in a chronically depressed economy where many parents of children subsist on the bottom rung of California's growing population of immigrants and the working poor. SERRF provides 1,800 kindergarten through eighth grade students instruction in academics, enrichment and recreation in coordination with schools to support the Common Core Student Learning Standards. SERRF serves all twenty-five Tehama County elementary and middle schools, including small, isolated rural school sites. In collaboration with Tehama County Department of Education, our Lead Educational Agency, we are an official "No Excuses University" County Department of Education. Through this affiliation, we have established high expectations for student achievement and promote the importance of college and career readiness for all Tehama County students. At Lights On events schools will be representing their selfselected college in creating mock diplomas, mascots, pennants. In addition, they will be developing academic goals for themselves, alongside their parents, and participating in a college-like tailgate party complete with healthy snacks, graduation gown relays and a variety of other "college crazy" festivities. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Pictured is second-grader Cole with his recently blessed puppy. Arnold receives white coat at ceremony HARROAGTE, TN -- Abram Arnold of Red Bluff received his white coat at the White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2017 at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, Tenn., on Sept. 21. Arnold is a first-year osteopathic medical student at LMU-DCOM. Prior to enrolling at LMU-DCOM, Arnold attended California State University, Chico. The White Coat Ceremony is a special ceremony designed to mark a student's entrance into medical school. The first White Coat Ceremony was held in 1993 at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and is now a standard ritual in institutions of both allopathic and osteopathic medical education across the country. During the Ceremony, each medical student is presented and "robed" with his or her short white laboratory coat, formalizing and welcoming the student's entrance into the study of medicine. The DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine is located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. Lassen View SERRF is off to a wonderful start. The focus this year has been nutrition and the selection of healthy snacks. To support these efforts, the program has had generous donations of watermelons and peaches from Julia's Fruit Stand. Its most recent donation of two watermelons served more than 160 snacks for the SERRF students at Lassen View. In addition, students had a generous parent donate 25 pounds of walnuts. During the "Lights On!" celebration for SERRF students and their parents, students will be giving a demo on how to candy and glaze walnuts. Students have made smoothies from local produce during "Fun Fridays," along with easy to make healthy wraps. Mrs. Stillwell, SERRF staff member, has taken her students on a culinary taste testing adventure in comparing the tastes of differently seasoned hummus. Did they like it? Of course. Car- rots taste great dipped in anything. SERRF is not all about eating, the primary students are perfecting the "freeze dance" activity. The older students are learning about tole painting and still others are learning the history of chocolate. For our "Lights On!" celebration, 4-5 p.m.m Oct. 17, students and parents will get the opportunity to test their knowledge of colleges in California and the United States. Plum Valley students enjoy fruits of garden Evergreen receives arts grant for Art Attack program The Kindergarten Team at Evergreen Elementary School was awarded a $250 grant from the Tehama County Arts Council this past summer. Those funds were used to purchase materials needed for the Arts Attack art curriculum in 5 kindergarten classrooms that serve more than 100 students. The Arts Attack curriculum helps students learn from the very beginning the proper techniques and terminology that they need to be successful with visual arts. It also gives them the experience to build confidence to express their creativity through the visual arts. Arts Attack not only helps build their level of artistic competence but also their ability to appreciate art in many forms. They also learn to become better listeners through the lessons and to build a confidence that enhances their academic experience. Students begin to identify themselves as artists. Tehama County Arts Council is a big part of supporting these Arts Attack projects this school year. The group relies in part on local memberships. Information about this group can be found at www.tehamaarts.oro.
