OPINION Fall Into Work Job Fair A Success by GENEVA MIXON The 2010 “Fall Into Work” community job fair on Oct. 6 at the Crown Expo Center was a huge success, attracting 4,700 job seekers and 93 vendors. The event provided employers the opportunity to showcase their businesses to the community and to meet a ready pool of applicants. For the job seekers, the fair was an excellent venue in which to present themselves to various organizations and to gather information on what types of jobs are available now and in the near future. A survey returned by 40 of the employers showed that they anticipated hiring 612 employees from the applications received at the job fair. The survey also revealed that the 40 employers anticipated hiring 761 employees within the next month; 1,189 employees in the next six months; and 2,042 employees in the next year. Those positions could be fi lled by job fair participants or through applications received after the event. On behalf of the Cumberland County Workforce Development Board, I would like to thank our various partners for their efforts in making the job fair our largest to date. This year’s partners were the Cumberland County Department of Social Services Work First Program, Beasley Broadcast Group, Fayetteville Technical Community College, City of Fayetteville Community Development, Fayetteville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce, Hardee’s Restaurants, and the Public Works Commission. We also wish to thank FTCC, Fayetteville State University’s Education Opportunity Center, the Fayetteville Area Society of Human Resource Managers and Fort Bragg Civilian Personnel Advisory Center for conducting workshops during this year’s fair on various topics such as interviewing skills, dressing for success, paying for college, applying for jobs at Fort Bragg, and earning teacher certifi cations. These organizations all contributed to the job fair’s success in bringing potential employers face to face with job seekers.
