INSIDE The Aftermath PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Well, election day is over and many of us, truth be known, are thankful. Regardless of your political affiliation, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent or Tea Party champion, the last several months have been agonizing for us all. The annoying phone calls at dinner time, political signs marring beautiful landscapes, the nasty Jerry Springer- style TV commercials and the endless stream of postcards and comical newspaper ads have us all asking “Who are you?” to the political candidates we thought we knew. Locally, some campaigns were outright brutal and tiresome. However, observing the candidates working hard and constantly jockeying for position spoke volumes of their dedication, determination and commitment. My hat is off to all the men and women who go through this process to devote their lives to public service at all levels. Yes, this election brought us a few surprises and perhaps just as many disappointments. What is no longer a surprise is what Americans expect from their leaders. They want their country back on track economically and they want respect, dignity and pride restored as American values. They want their concerns over taxes, unemployment, healthcare and Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast November 5 Thursday November 4 Saturday November 6 High 62° Low 43° Rain High 58° Low 35° Partly Cloudy 4 UCW NOVEMBER 3 - 9, 2010 High 55° Low 32° Partly Cloudy Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday this lackluster-plodding economy recognized and addressed. They want to be heard. To that end, every newly elected offi cial’s performance, regardless of affi liation, will be viewed under a microscope by the electorate. The people want action, and they want honesty. They want political leaders at all levels to listen and to do the right thing. is all about. Oh, yeah, one last request, PLEASE pick up your signs. We can only hope! I want to congratulate all the newly elected or re- elected offi cials and wish them the very best in their quest to serve their constituents. For those who didn’t make the cut, I want to thank you for your service and for being passionate enough to participate in the process.
