SOCCER Foothill 2 Red Bluff 4 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor One of the Spartans’ best overall efforts of the season produced a 4-2 win, Wednesday, over the visiting Foothill Cougars. “We played as a team,” Red Bluff goalie Carlos Mendoza said. “We talked — you could here us out there.” Red Bluff sent a message early when Enrique Ascencio hit the cross- bar from 25 yards out. Minutes later Daniel Gonzalez slipped between a pair of Foothill defenders and beat the Cougar defense for the game’s first goal. Aubrey Huff singled with one out in the ninth and took third when Buster Posey singled for his fourth hit of the game. Uribe hit a medium-deep fly, leaving left fielder Ben Francisco with no chance to get the sliding Huff. Boosted by yet another big hit from Cody Ross and a timely double from Pablo Sandoval, the Giants pushed the two-time defending NL champion Phillies to the brink of elimination. He’s made only a few relief appearances in the last several years, including a stint in the 2004 NLCS for Houston. Uribe, sore left wrist and all that kept him out of the starting lineup, entered at shortstop in the top of the ninth. Red Bluff wasn’t phased. In the 28th minute Martin Hlinka used some individual creativity to sep- arate himself for a split second from a Cougar defender and blasted a ball through the hands of Foothill goalie Ryan Ford for a 2-1 Red Bluff lead. The Cougars had a golden opportu- nity to equalize five minutes later when Mendoza was caught off his line mak- ing a sliding save, but Red Bluff defender Kyle Davis covered the goal line and cleared a would-be goal out of harm’s way with his head. With just a minute to go until half- time Hlinka set up Jorge Garcia inside the 6-yard line. Garcia used a back heel to beat Ford for a 3-1 halftime lead. Foothill tried to push forward in the second half, but Red Bluff needed only nine minutes to burn them for it. Rogelio Velaquez went unmarked and got behind the Foothill defense and buried home Red Bluff’s fourth goal. In the 68th minute Gonzalez drew a penalty kick for Red Bluff when he cut across the goal line. Davis appeared to put Red Bluff up 5-1 when he converted the penalty kick, but the Spartans were called for encroachment and the kick had to be retaken. The second attempt went directly to Ford, who made the save. Foothill was only able to get one goal back as Matt Reiser scored in the 72nd minute on a long distance blast from about 30 yards out. It was the only slip up from the defense in the second half as Red Bluff sat back on its lead and shut down the Cougars. “Even though it’s the end of the sea- son — they’re coming together,” Red Bluff coach Claudio Martinez said.
