My new heart has been rejected by my body several times, and 3 months ago I was given a pacemaker. The pacemaker beats for my new heart when it slows or if my heart gets too fast. I am on numerous anti-rejection meds and will be for the rest of my life. I have to go to Stanford Hospital for check-ups several times a month and for biopsies. This will definite- ly have an effect financially on fur- thering my education and goals in life.” When asked to type a brief essay about how he would demonstrate his commitment to furthering his education and why he was pursuing a particular area of interest he said, "I have been sick with heart dis- ease since my birth 17 years ago, Courtesy photo Pictured are Berendos Parlor members Ellie Frost, Bonnie Love, D'Lorah Hurton, Ethel Clay, Kathy Sibert, Mildred Pierce, Christine Rainwater, Ida Knowles and Marjorie Smith, with Grand President Barbara Rowland. and have been hospitalized for most of my life. It was there that I real- ized the importance of medical care, specifically in the nursing pro- fession. I have been up close and personal with the calming effect a good nurse can have on a patient, and since my stays at hospitals began a long time ago, I know the importance of how to show comfort and compassion. I have had my blood drawn so many times in my life that I think I could do it myself. I hope to someday become a good nurse and be able to give back to heart patients and other people with serious illnesses the kindness that I have experienced.” Marshall was only able to com- plete his first semester of college. He passed away last month. Beren- dos Parlor voted to send the remain- ing half of his scholarship to his family, as a memorial. Berendos Parlor meets on the first Thursday of every month. An installation is being planned at the November meeting, for a grand- mother and granddaughter who is named after her, both of whom were born in California. Member- ship is open to anyone who loves California heritage. For information call 527-6818.
