1B Sports Angel Pagan's big night leads Giants over Mets 8-5 NEW YORK (AP) — Angel Pagan homered, tripled and drove in three runs on a perfect night at the plate against his former team, leading Yusmeiro Petit and the San Francisco Giants past the New York Mets 8-5 on Tuesday. Pagan went 3 for 3 with two walks and scored twice from the leadoff spot for the Giants, who have won four straight and seven of nine. His tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning made a winner of Petit (4-0) in his second start since nearly pitching a perfect game. Before the game, the Mets announced that Matt Harvey will try to rehab his injured right elbow without reconstructive surgery — a move the All-Star ace hopes is going to keep him on the mound next season. Pagan homered off Sean Henn (0-1) leading off the seventh to give the Giants a 5-4 lead. Wednesday September 18, 2013 New faces, new places Athletics adding seating for AL division series OAKLAND (AP) — The AL West-leading Oakland Athletics sold out their normal capacity for the Coliseum so fast Tuesday they have decided to open up additional seating in the third deck view level by removing the green tarps over those sections. With approximately 12,000 extra seats available — which includes space for overflow media — the capacity will go from 35,067 to 48,146. That doesn't include the highest Mt. Davis section, the fourth level on the ballpark's east side. Tickets for three potential AL division series games to be played next month at the Coliseum sold out in two hours Tuesday, prompting the decision. The first potential home playoff game sold out in 40 minutes. Oakland officials have only made decisions about stadium capacity for the first round, the team said. Williams, who was scheduled to undergo surgery on the ankle, was injured on by a block by J.R. Sweezy early in the 49ers' 29-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Williams, a three-year veteran who made his first career start against the Seahawks, has played in six games and has 11 tackles. He originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2011. Barry Bonds to meet with US Probation Department SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Barry Bonds has been ordered to meet with U.S. Probation Department officials to discuss terms of his 30-day house arrest. A federal judge ordered Bonds to meet with the officials to work out the details of his sentence after he lost his appeal of his felony obstruction of justice conviction. The order was dated Monday and made public Tuesday. A jury convicted Bonds in 2011 and he was sentenced to home confinement, two years of probation and a $4,000 fine. The sentence was put on hold while Bonds pursued his appeal. Now that he lost, Major League Baseball's career home run leader said he would like to immediately begin serving his sentence. (AP) — Alex Smith is still winning in red. He's just doing it for the Chiefs these days. Mike Wallace is finally happy in Miami, Anquan Boldin is making everyone happy in San Francisco, and that's just the start of the new faces in new places making a splash this season. Wes Welker went from hauling in passes from Tom Brady in New England to doing the same from Peyton Manning in Denver — how'd he get so lucky? Steven Jackson's legs are churning in Atlanta, Darrelle Revis is defending passes in Tampa Bay and Elvis Dumervil is putting heat on quarterbacks for Baltimore after a bizarre end to his time with the Broncos. ''I feel amazing,'' said Dumervil, who actually agreed to a restructured contract to remain in the AFC West, only for the paper work to arrive late at the league office. Denver was forced to release Dumervil to avoid having the $12 million he was set to make this season become guaranteed. Dumervil still considered staying in Denver, but ultimately signed with the Ravens. ''It's always nice to get a guy in there who can bring new ideas to you and new ways of doing things and Elvis has certainly done that,'' Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. ''He's latched on with the things we're doing, and it's been a great mesh.'' It's been a happy marriage for a lot of other high-profile players, too. After Smith was benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick during San Francisco's NFC championship run last year, he began looking elsewhere to play this season. The 49ers worked a trade in February to send him to Kansas City, and now Smith is running the offense for new coach Andy Reid. He's doing it well, too. Smith has thrown four touchdown passes without an interception in beating Jacksonville and Dallas, matching the Chiefs' entire win total from last season. ''From about mid-season last year I was thinking about where my next opportunity was potentially going to come,'' Smith said, ''and when this presented itself, I jumped at it.'' He wasn't alone in jumping on the Chiefs bandwagon. Reid climbed aboard after 14 seasons leading the Eagles, and veteran defensive backs Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson were signed in free agency. Together, they've helped turn around a franchise that heads to Philadelphia on Thursday night seeking its second 3-0 start in a decade. ''The one neat thing about the business is everybody has a personality,'' Reid said of his team, more than half of which is new this year. ''That's the way it is in life. So if you're going to get that full player, they need to express themselves, I think. That's what we do.'' Wallace has had no qualms with expressing himself in Miami. The former Steelers wide receiver was miffed that he caught only one pass in the opener, but came back to match a career high with nine catches against the Colts on Sunday. He was acquired to give Miami a badly needed deep threat, and so far he's helped the Dolphins to a 2-0 start. ''He's a guy that's really intellectual when it comes to football,'' fellow wide receiver Brian Hartline said. ''Probably doesn't get a whole lot of credit for it, but he really understands the game, wants to learn more about the game and like I said, has a rare skill set.'' Sounds like many of the same qualities Boldin has brought to San Francisco. The 49ers acquired him from the Ravens for a sixth-round pick, and he's helped them overcome the loss of Michael Crabtree to a torn Achilles tendon. Boldin was shut down last week by Seattle, but had 13 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown in a Week 1 win over the Packers. ''It's my job to catch the ball. And anytime (Kaepernick) throws the ball my way, I'm going to make sure to catch it,'' Boldin said. ''For me, it's a business. I come out to do my job.'' Wallace and Boldin weren't the only high-profile wide receivers who found new digs. Welker spent six seasons in New England before signing with Denver this past offseason. Strange as it is to see Walker in a new uniform, though, it may be stranger to see Jackson wearing Falcons threads. The veteran running back had eight straight 1,000-yard seasons for the Rams, and is now trying to help Matt Ryan and Co. pursue an elusive Super Bowl. ''He adds an incredible amount of leadership to this football team,'' Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said, ''and his combination of on and off the field abilities and passion for this game is right in line with how we feel we build this football team and have built this football team the last few years. In our minds we couldn't have a more ideal fit right now.'' Owen Marecic signs with 49ers SANTA CLARA (AP) — Owen Marecic joined the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, signing a one-year contract two weeks after being released by the Cleveland Browns. If San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh had his way, Marecic would have been with the 49ers on draft day in 2011. Marecic won't be rushed into the starting lineup. Bruce Miller remains the 49ers starter at fullback. Harbaugh will find a way to use Marecic, perhaps in ways he used him when they both were at Stanford. The 49ers are looking for ways to tweak their offense. Marecic, who also played linebacker in college, enjoys physical contact with his opponents. Miller looks at the addition as another competitive challenge. ''Competition is always great,'' said Miller, who was called for holding in the end zone Sunday's loss to Seattle, resulting in a safety. ''You're always going to compete at that spot. I've watched him on film. He's a good football player. I'm just going to worry about me.'' Marecic worked out for the 49ers soon after his release from the Browns. He's been in Portland, Ore., near where he grew up, continuing his own workouts. ''There's nothing specific,'' Marecic said of his pos- sible role with the 49ers. ''I'm going to work hard every day to do whatever role I can fill. They told me I would be on offense, as the backup fullback, and contribute on special teams.'' Marecic was the inaugural winner of the Paul Hornung Award, presented to college football's most versatile player. ''It feels good to have the opportunity,'' Marecic said. ''I look forward to finding a way to contribute.'' Miller, who played defense before switching to fullback, said Sunday's 293 loss to Seattle showed he still had a long way to go. ''I have to be better,'' he said. ''Turnovers, drive killers, penalties, that forced us into a lot of third down and long situations. We have to be more focused on what we're doing.'' The 49ers were limited to 100 yards rushing, 87 by quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Frank Gore was limited to 16 yards on nine carries. ''Frank is a great back, but when we don't execute, it breaks down,'' Miller said. ''Frank can be the greatest running back of all time, but we still need to block for him.'' That may be where Marecic makes his biggest contributions. When he blocks, he doesn't consider it successful unless he flattens his defender. PREP ROUNDUP FIELD HOCKEY Corning 5, Pleasant Valley 1 Corning High's Kobye Rezendes nabbed a hat trick in a 5-1 win against visiting Pleasant Valley on Monday. The Lady Cards overcame a slow start to score 13 minutes into the game after Bailey Jennings hooked up with Maria Diaz, whose score at the corer gave Corning its first goal. It was the first of four first-half scores. The second coming after Grace Mora assisted her sister, Audrey, for a goal. Rezendes took on the scoring load from there, scoring first off an assist from Jennings. Grace Mora assisted Rezendes on her second score before the half. Rezendes competed her hat trick 20 seconds into the second half to give the Cards their fifth goal. Kaitlyn Huntley had five saves in 30 minutes. And Sarah Boone notched a save and allowed one goal. The Cards next visit River Valley at 3:30 p.m. today.
