Chair r speaksspeaks Chamber Hosts Successful Washington, D.C. Fly In Members and staff of the Fayetteville- Cumberland County Chamber attended Mike McIntyre’s 14th Annual Business and Economic Development Summit in Washington DC on September 13 and 14. “A visit like this allow us to discuss Chris Bostock with our Washington leadership the most important needs of Fayetteville and Cumberland County, and provides us an excellent opportunity to thank them for all their efforts on behalf of the region,” said Bo Gregory, director of Economic Development for the Fayetteville-Cum- berland County Chamber of Commerce. “We are very fortunate to have such high caliber representation in Business ssSpotlightSpotlight Washington and appreciate their continued support of our joint County and City Federal Legislative agenda, including the funding for infrastructure in our military business park and the PDI-DSTA lab facility” Monday included a presentation from Joseph DeSimone, UNC chemistry professor, and a military business panel including mem- bers of the Fayetteville delegation. The day closed with a panel of congressional leaders including local representatives McIntyre, Kis- sell, and Etheridge. Representative Etheridge and Senator Richard Burr joined the delegation at dinner. Tuesday was a day of speakers including Representative and two-time presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, General James T. Conway, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, and General George W. Casey Jr., Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Community Named One of the Nation’s Best for Young People The efforts of Ft. Bragg and City of Fayetteville civic and com- munity leaders were honored today when America’s Promise Alliance (the Alliance), the nation’s largest partnership organization dedicated to youth and children, announced the community had been named a winner of the Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best) competition presented by ING, a global financial services company and leading provider of retirement plans and programs for teachers. Its 2010 recognition marks the second win for Fort Bragg in the competition, and the first joint win in partnership with the City of Fayetteville. The 100 Best designation recognizes those communities that make youth a priority by implementing programs that help keep children in school and prepare them for college and the 21st century workforce. The competition is open to all communities that make children and youth a priority, including small towns, large cities, counties and school districts. In addition to enhancing local educational opportunities, most winning communities have taken steps to facilitate improved ac- cess to health care for its young people, encourage youth civic engage- ment and supply developmental resources that create better places for young people to live and grow.
