COMMUNITY NEWS Missions of Mercy Free Dental Clinic a Success Cumberland County Commissioners presented Don Soucy, a volunteer with the North Carolina Missions of Mercy Free Adult Dental Clinic, with the Cumberland Cares Recognition Award at their Aug. 19 meeting. The two-day clinic was held at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center in July. Soucy organized the efforts and trained more than 400 community volunteers for the event. Their duties included helping with patient registration, medical and dental triage; and serving as scribes, translators, runners and data entry clerks. About 250 dental professionals also donated their time to the program. Cathy Ory, chair of the Fayetteville Missions of Mercy Planning Committee, nominated Soucy, who has served as the project's community volunteer coordinator for two years. This year's Free Adult Dental Clinic served 885 patients with services valued at $496,983. The patients seen are low-income, uninsured who have no other options for care. Some patients waited all night outside the Expo Center for the chance to receive dental care. The Cumberland Cares award recognizes a Cumberland County individual, group or agency which has made an outstanding contribution toward a better quality of life for the county's citizens. For more information, or to submit a nomination, call the clerk to the board of commissioners at 678-7771 or go online to www.co.cumberland.nc.us/public_info/downloads/nominations_form. pdf. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month when Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center joins with the American Library Association to promote the value of having a library card. With a free library card, students can get help with homework through Tutor. com, an online service that offers free tutoring for grades K-12. For everyone, the library has free downloadable content such as e-books, audio books, videos and digital magazines. When customers pick up their new library card at any of the library's eight locations, they are eligible for a free library water bottle (while supply lasts) and an entry into a drawing for a bag of fun items, including books, t-shirts, messenger bags and mugs. All of the entries will be combined into one systemwide drawing for a free Kindle Fire HD, perfect for downloading free library materials. Prizes for the drawings are provided by the Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center, Inc. This promotion is limited to new library accounts. For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit your local branch or the library's website at cumberland.lib.nc.us. Beginning in late fall, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will charge a fee of $4 per sample for routine soil testing during the peak season. The 2013 Appropriations Act passed by the General Assembly approved a $4 fee for soil samples analyzed by the NCDA&CS for the period from December through March. The fee is an attempt to lessen the backlog associated with the busy season when the lab is routinely inundated with tens of thousands of samples. The rest of the year — April through November — NCDA&CS will continue to analyze soil samples without a fee. This year, Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday and is preceded by the Thanksgiving holidays. Wednesday, Nov. 27, will be the last business day of the month for the soil-testing lab. Any soil samples arriving after 6 p.m. on Nov. 27 will be subject to the peak-season fee because they will not be logged in and processed until Dec. 2. Contact the NCDA&CS Agronomic Division office at 919-733-2655 if you have any questions regarding the new peak-season soil-testing fee or visit the website: http://www.ncagr.gov/agronomi/. If you are dropping off your soil samples at the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Office, please bring them before 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, in order to avoid the peak season fee.
