International Voices and Perspectives Is a Highlight of 4th Friday The Headquarters Branch of the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center will once again host Cultural Connection’s International Voices & Perspectives as part of 4th Friday. Al-Damkhi During this special event, visiting Fulbright scholars from around the world talk about their life experiences; and what this opportunity to spend a year in America means to them. The 2010 scholars presenting include Bedour Al-Damkhi from Kuwait, De Chen from China and David Otieno from Kenya. Two of the scholars are secondary school teachers and one teaches at a university in their home country. The program starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Septem- ber 24 in the Pate Room of the Headquarters branch at 300 Maiden Lane. A panel discussion will be fol- lowed by a question and answer session. “This program provides a nice opportunity to refl ect on what opportunities within the United States mean to others,” says John Meroski, FACVB president and CEO. “Educators have embraced International Voices and Perspectives.” Cultural Connection’s Diversity task force developed Interna- Convention & Visitors Bureau, is dedicated to implementing the community’s Cultural Heritage task plan. Extension Offers Beekeeping Course The Cumberland County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension is offering a Beginning Beekeeping Course. This course starts Monday, October 4 at 6 p.m. and meets each Monday evening for six weeks. The course covers the basic knowledge needed to get started into beekeeping, including equipment; honey bee biology; products of the beehive; honey bees and plants; honey bee problems; and starting beehives. Poor Richard Is Coming To Fayetteville Benjamin Franklin (actor Rich Davis of Summerville, S.C.) will visit Cliffdale Regional Branch Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, to talk about “Poor Richard’s Guide to Health and Fitness.” Davis says he became interested in health and fi tness out of necessity: “I wanted to save my own life, to provide a way to counteract health issues that includ- ed arthritis, herniated disc, back pain, sciatic pain, weight gain, and a basic decline in body structure due to the effects of age and a sedentary lifestyle. I found that to continue living life on my own terms, I had to take specifi c action. “I decided that I needed a complete plan that included fl exibility, strength, and De Chen tional Voices & Perspectives. Cultural Connections, a task force of the Fayetteville Area aerobic conditioning as well as weight loss through healthy eating habits. The key for me was a simple tool for change: On one sheet of paper I have a daily guide, a 10-week course, and a lifetime plan.” There is no cost to attend the program. Davis’ new book Poor Richard’s Guide to Health and Fitness will be available for purchase but is not required to do the fi t- ness plan.
