Cover photo by Alphonso Peppers Jr. INSIDE You are NOT Entitled PUBLISHER’S PEN “You are NOT entitled to what I have earned” reads a bright red bumper sticker I am seeing all too frequently now that election time is only weeks away. This bipartisan message represents the frustration and anger harbored by many Americans, not just residents of Fayetteville and Cumberland County. What happens in our community politically is a direct refl ection of the national leadership we have in Washington, D.C. Arrogant, crazy, unbridled and wasteful spending, unresponsiveness to constituents, ignoring the opinions and collective will of the American people and the failure to seek out basic truth and justice. OMG... let’s face it, Washington (Congress) is out of control and there is plenty of blame to go around. This sad state of national affairs is not the making of one person nor is it only the fault of the Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Independents or Tea-Party supporters. The American people are extremely frustrated. They have questions and they want answers. Honest answers! On the Fayetteville/Cumberland County scene it is this same of lack of communication and empathy toward the taxpayer that has had a trickle-down affect all too obvious in our daily lives. All three governments are guilty of back-room politics, poor communication, questionable priorities, wasteful spending and making bad, unilateral decisions. Note: In local government and politics, just because a board votes on an issue doesn’t mean it is not a “unilateral” decision. At this point you are probably wondering what this has to do with the bumper sticker “You are NOT entitled to what I have earned.” A great deal actually. You see it’s OUR tax dollars they are spending and wasting every day with each useless study or survey that is funded then ignored or every bad contract that is signed and paid for with our money. Every building that is constructed too small Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Saturday September 23 September 24 September 25 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Thursday or in the wrong location, is funded with our money (think the Cumberland County Jail, the proposed City of Fayetteville Transportation hub, the Crown Coliseum, etc.). Failed economic-development projects like Mel Henderson’s’ Docks and the Lundy Building were both subsidized with our money. The Lundy Building, is still, in fact, being subsidized with our money. Making matters worse is that the failures of these ventures took those responsible totally by surprise. It begs the question, who was the department, person or persons responsible for looking after the city’s interest and the money that Fayetteville taxpayers had “earned?” Who was responsible for looking after the taxpayers investment? In both cases our leadership was asleep at the wheel and the local taxpayers will again feel the brunt of the consequences. So, regardless of race, creed, religion or political affi liation the adage “You are NOT entitled to what I have earned” means that the elected offi cials, at all levels, must be responsible, responsive and honest in dealing with the revenue taxpayers provide them. If not, then they will have to go. And, in November 2010, many of them will. The Fayetteville/Cumberland County community is moving forward and our future looks extremely bright. Newcomers to our area cannot appreciate the tremendous progress we have made here during the last 10 years. However, this progress, as good as it is, pales in comparison to where we should be or could be if we had talented, professional, aggressive and cooperative leadership that can look beyond their own piece of geography. Until then, enjoy what we have and hope our progress and future potential will motivate and inspire energetic and innovative leadership. Heaven knows we surely deserve it.
