Saturday, September 11, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Campaign to show Muslims are like everyone else (MCT) — One of the most interesting things about American Muslims appears to be their sports loyalties. That's what many have discussed in filming personal messages for an online campaign aimed at countering anti- Muslim rhetoric in the wake of controversy over a proposed Islamic center in New York City and mosque protests else- where. Several dozen videos have been posted so far. The videos, which American Muslims are invited to record and upload onto the campaign's website, mostly fol- low a script: The speakers introduce themselves, give an "interesting fact" about themselves and then launch into a prewritten message about Islam's teachings. They say that Muslims do not want to impose their religion on others and should not be feared. The grassroots campaign, called My Faith My Voice, grew out of conversations among a number of Muslim pro- fessionals about what they felt was a recent rise in anti-Mus- lim sentiment. The campaign was launched last week at a news confer- ence in Washington, D.C., with the unveiling of a public service announcement. The 1-minute video features Mus- lims of various ethnicities, ages and occupations, including a man wearing a Philadelphia Phillies T-shirt. Those behind the campaign, which they say is not asso- ciated with any organization, are relying heavily on social media to encourage American Muslims to create the short videos about themselves and their faith. They are also rais- ing money to turn the videos into TV ads to reach an audi- ence beyond those visiting www.myfaithmyvoice.com. The effort echoes previous campaigns geared toward showing Muslims as regular Americans and making them easier to relate to. The Council on American-Islamic Rela- tions, a Washington-based civil rights group, ran a year- long print ad campaign in 2003 titled Islam in America, and this week announced public service announcements featuring Muslims who were among the first responders on 9/11. The videos are "a chance to speak to Americans without a filter," said Rabiah Ahmed, 33, who runs a public relations firm in northern Virginia on the outskirts of Washington and is one of the project members. "There's so many things that we do that people can relate to." And it seems what some Muslims most want to share is their love for a sports team. "That's very American for you," Ahmed said with a laugh when asked about the prevalence of sports in the videos. "We could have a recession going on, we could have a war going on, we could have the worst things going but we'll always have sports." When Ahmed recorded her own video for the project, she decided not to describe herself as a Detroit Pistons fan — not wanting to offend those more partial to the Lions and Tigers — and instead declared herself a devoted Detroiter. Irfan Mehmood, the campaign's outreach coordinator, had no problem making his loyalties public; he appears in front of a wall covered in New Orleans Saints symbols and gives the team chant: "Who dat say they gonna beat them Saints?" Sports isn't the only personal detail mentioned in the videos. Most border on the mundane, with participants talk- ing about their home states, children and jobs. The specifics send the message: Muslims are ordinary Americans. Hope Rescue Mission What do you do when you see someone holding up a sign, "Will work for food"? Do you roll down your window and give them money? Do you pretend you didn’t see them? Do you do what Jesus does – take a look at what the Father is doing and let that be your model? It is no always easy, but this could be a great opportu- nity to practice being wise as a serpent and innocent as a dove – right here in our own neighborhood. Nobody likes to be confronted by the homeless – their needs often seem to be too overwhelming. There pres- ence seems almost an indictment of the failure of the American Dream of equal opportunity. Some of us react with anger at the homeless them- selves for forcing us into corners of mind we don’t want to see. Others react with a quick-fix brand of com- passion that wants to do something to make ourselves feel better for the moment in which we think we are helping. Down deep we all want to treat them fairly and justly, if we only know how. Here are some simple guidelines to equip you to truly help the homeless people you meet: 1. Never give cash to a homeless person. Too often, well-intended gifts are converted to drugs or alcohol – even when the "hard luck" stories they tell are true. If the person is hungry, buy them a sandwich and a beverage. If your time and energy permits, spend a few moments with them and learn who they are. But at least give some- thing they can use to a good purpose – food – rather than something they can covert to a poor one – cash. 2. Talk to the person with respect. Taking time to talk to a homeless person in a friend- ly, respectful manner can give them a wonderful sense of civility and dignity. And besides being just neighborly, it gives the person a weapon to fight the isolation, depres- sion and paranoia that many homeless people face. 3. Recognize that home- less people (and their prob- lems) are not all the same. The homeless are as diverse as the colors of a rain- bow. The person you meet may be a battered woman, an addicted veteran, or someone who is lacking job skills. Often the person suffers from a non- dangerous mental illness. The list goes on. can. today, He would certainly spend time with the homeless. He would speak with them, heal them, and help them. Today, Jesus chooses to work through those who believe and follow Him. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. He says, In Matthew 25:31-40, that we serve Him and grow close to Him when we serve those who cannot serve themselves in His Name. 5. Pray for the homeless. Exposure to the elements, dirt, EXAMINE YOUR OWN DEEDS FIRST Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Over- land Park, Kan: Theodicy plagues the religious soul. If God is just, why do bad things occur? If God is not just, why practice self-sacrifice for justice? The biblical God is bound by justice: "Shall not the judge of all the earth do justly?" asks Abraham. (Genesis 18) Yet, we experience both apparently good souls who suf- fer and clearly wicked souls who prosper. Where's the jus- tice in that? There are easy answers: 1) The wicked will be repaid in the afterlife or, 2) They receive their reward in this world so that they will be immediately punished in the next or, 3) They are receiving now the rewards for deeds committed in past lives. But such answers do not ultimately satisfy our need for a meaning-filled universe. Micah demands that we examine our own deeds, not compare ourselves to others. (Micah 6:8) "Justice, justice shall you pursue" (Deuteronomy16:20) commands that we, individually, live according to the dictates of justice, under our own scrutiny, answering to our own God. Do not be malcontent when the wicked seem to prosper, but accept the occasional violence, and lack of pur- pose all drain years from a person’s life. God can use your prayers and the brutality and the futility of life of the street to bring many of the broken to Himself. He says that everything we ask in accordance with His will and word will be done in His Name. He says also that we change as we pray. 6. Take precautions for Barry Coccelato GodTalk 4. Share God’s love whenever you If Jesus were walking the earth your own safety. Some living on the streets are criminals and fugitives running from the law. Always be prudent while talking with street people. Stay in areas where other people can see you. Don’t take unnecessary chances. 7. Encourage the home- less to get help through your local mis- sion. Your local mission stands ready to offer both short and long-term assis- tance to all who come in need. Pastor Barry Coccelato is the director of Red Bluff's Hope Rescue Mission. His ministry is in the spirit of Jesus' Parable of the Sheep and the Goats in Matthew 25. It is an opportunity for the city to come together in Jesus' Name. Voices of Faith: Why do good things happen to bad people? McClatchy Newspapers challenge of correcting their evil with our good. Justice demands arduous, ongoing work not a quick fix. The reward is in the satisfaction of living by God's word. HEAVEN AWAITS THOSE WHO DO RIGHT The Rev. Fran T. Cary, pastor of Trinity A M E Church, Kansas City, Kan.: Individuals in the Bible asked the same question. The prophet Habakkuk lived during the time when Babylon was rising to power in the ancient Near East. Babylon was a ruthless power that raped its victims and seemingly sought to rule without reason. And yet Babylon prospered. "How could this be?" the prophet wondered. Though humankind differs in sinfulness, there is no dif- ference between the best and the worst. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) No matter what the world has to offer, for Christians, everything else is worthless when compared with the infi- nite value of knowing Christ. Knowing Christ does not mean the absence of suffering or a guarantee of fame and wealth. Instead, we have the eter- nal hope of heaven. Our focus is not envying the wicked. Psalm 1:5-6 says, "They will have no part in the company of the righteous in heaven. They will perish and be destroyed to end up suffering for eternity in the lake of fire."
