4B – Daily News – Friday, September 10, 2010 Free employment training for veterans The Veterans’ Employment and Training Service and the Employment and Training Administration’s (ETA) Job Corps are partnering in a demonstration project that will provide Job Corps’ comprehensive array of career development services to eligible vet- erans 20 to 24 years old to prepare them for suc- cessful careers. This is a fully-funded, all-expense-paid demon- stration project that is free for the veterans. The pro- gram includes transportation to and from the Job Corps center, housing, meals, basic medical ser- vices, academic and career technical training, bi- weekly living allowance and job placement and post-graduation support. Job Corps employs a holistic career development training approach that teaches academic, vocational, employability skills and social competencies in an integrated manner through a combination of class- room, practical and based learning experiences to prepare participants for stable, long-term and high- paying jobs. One of the important outcomes is that participants will obtain a credential or certificate cer- The following defendants were sentenced in Tehama County Superior Court, according to the Tehama County District Attorney’s Office: —————— Recent State Prison Com- mitments: • David Ryan Sumahit was sentenced to five years in state prison and 120 days in Tehama County Jail for possession of a firearm by a felon; transporta- tion of a controlled substance. An officer conducted a traf- fic stop on a vehicle driven by Sumahit. Upon contacting Sumahit and his passenger the officer could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. After a search of the vehicle the officer located a sawed off shotgun, a .22 cal- iber rifle and a small amount of methamphetamine in the passenger’s wallet. Sumahit was originally granted formal probation. He violated his pro- tifying them in a trade. Veterans accepted will be living among non-vet- erans and other veterans who are transitioning from the military to civilian life. One of the Job Corps program’s key benefits is its post-graduate support. When Veterans are ready to begin transitioning into their career, Job Corps staff will assist them in job searching, resume drafting and job interviewing skills. Job Corps will provide graduates with transition services for up to 21 months after graduation, including assistance with housing, transportation and other support services. Upon completion of training, veterans will be assigned to a career transi- tion counselor to assist them with job placement or enrollment in higher education. The enrollment will be open and continuous until a center reaches 100 veterans. It is expected that vet- eran participants will be enrolling and graduating at various rates. COURT ROUND-UP • Jose Angel Garcia Ramos bation based upon his new charges. was sentenced to 16 months in state prison for having a con- cealed firearm on the person. Deputies were dispatched to a residence regarding Ramos shooting a gun outside the home. When the deputies arrived they located Ramos inside the residence. On Ramos’ waistband deputies removed a loaded semi-auto- matic pistol which was con- cealed under his shirt. • Paula Sue Dias was sen- tenced to eight months in state prison consecutive to a two- yearn prison term for petty theft with a prior. Dias was caught on a sur- veillance video in a local gro- cery store removing a tube of Neosporin from the box, plac- ing the tube in her pocket and putting the empty box back on the shelf. Dias did this again a second time before being con- fronted by the store owner. Recent County Jail Com- mitments: • Justin Wade Morgan was sentenced to 270 days in Tehama County Jail for pos- session of marijuana for sale, special allegation-prior strike. A deputy conducted a traf- fic stop on a vehicle driven by Morgan. Upon contacting Morgan the deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The deputy conducted a search of the vehi- cle with the use of a K-9 and located approximately 4 pounds of marijuana and a dig- ital scale. • George Dimitriadis was sentenced to 30 days in Tehama County Jail for grand theft of lost property. Dimitriadis found the vic- tim’s wallet in the parking lot of a local grocery store with $600 inside. Dimitriadis returned the wallet to the store without the money inside.
