In the event that a child is mauled by the mountain lion, the city could be liable for not dealing with the problem. “When all the cats and dogs are gone, (the mountain lion) will be looking for something else for dinner,” Byrne said. City Attorney Rick Crabtree said, legally, not acting could be considered negligence on the part of the city. However, the argument would be that the city has limited control over a mountain lion. To date, there have been 12 mountain lion sightings, although one of the reports was unfounded, Police Chief Paul Nanfito said. ‘When all the cats and dogs are gone, (the mountain lion) will be looking for something else for dinner’ Councilman Jim Byrne Garage blaze By GEOFF JOHNSON DN Staff Writer A fire swallowed a Johnson Street garage and chewed through an adjoining attic Wednes- day afternoon before Red Bluff firefighters were able to stop the blaze. No one was reported to be hurt but firefighters were still unsure of the cause, Chief Michael Bachmeyer said. The basic structure of the house, at 1010 John- son St., endured but the combination of smoke and heat damage may have left the residence unusable, he said. “These folks will defi- nitely be displaced for awhile,” Bachmeyer said. Firefighters received reports of the fire just after 4:10 p.m. and arrived to find the garage ablaze and ammunition inside exploding, Bachmeyer said. A small propane tank may have also been in the garage. A few flames reached the home of Matt Brad- shaw, whose house almost touches the east wall of the garage. Bradshaw said he first learned about the fire when he heard a knock on his door. No one was on the other side, but when Bradshaw saw the fire, he grabbed his 10-month-old daughter and his car keys drove away. “This makes me feel helpless,” Bradshaw said. See BLAZE, page 7A The department has been working with California Depart- ment of Fish and Game to trap the mountain lion. On Tuesday, a DFG lieutenant was in Red Bluff in search of the mountain lion. The police have been given the authority to use deadly force and kill the mountain lion if necessary, Nanfito said. Details released in hostage incident By GEOFF JOHNSON DN Staff Writer Tehama County Sheriff’s Deputies Wednesday released new information on a five-hour Friday stand- off. Corning resident Shawn Edward Lee, 43, reportedly attacked and held his Richfield Road neighbors hostage just before 7 p.m. for reasons not made clear in the press release. See HOSTAGE, page 7A City approves downtown street renovation By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer Red Bluff will be ask- ing for bids on a project that would fix streets in the downtown area. Under the Downtown Street Rehabilitation pro- ject micro surfacing will be done on roadways between Main and Mon- roe streets and Walnut and Cedar streets. The goal is to have the fairly-faced project com- pleted by November, as micro surfacing is weath- er sensitive and is best done during warm weath- er. The micro surfacing should be good for a min- imum of up to 10 years, Public Works Director Mark Barthel said. Woman arrested in domestic dispute A Corning woman was arrested Monday night after she reportedly bat- tered her ex-boyfriend and bit a police officer. Michelle Lynn Berry, 38, was drunk and refused to return the keys of one Nicholas Antone Lepeil- bet, also 38, Corning, according to a press release issued by the Corn- ing Police Department. When officers arrived to the Toomes Avenue incident, Lepeilbet told officers Berry had punched him and slapped him in the arm, face and back. Berry was arrested, but when she was placed in the back of a patrol car, Berry started hitting her head against the prisoner cage screen. When the officer tried to restrain her Berry bit the officer on the left arm and was shackled. Berry was booked into the Tehama County Jail on suspicion of domestic bat- tery, being intoxicated in public and delaying or resisting a police officer through violence. Bail was set at $30,250. —Staff report 7 5 8 5 5 1 6 9 0 0 1 9 Cortney William Garrett Graveside Service Saturday, Sept. 11th 2:00 PM Oak Hill Cemetery The Garrett Family Red Bluff Outdoor Power Business Connections LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING With results electronically sent to DOJ & FBI Appointments and/or walk-ins. 332 Pine St., Red Bluff 527-6229 Since 1979 The project is estimat- ed to cost about $130,000 and is funded through a portion of the city’s Proposition 1B money.
