the lyre letter XI CHAPTER OF ALPHA CHI OMEGA | UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN | SUMMER 2025 M any times throughout my 28 years of marriage, my husband, Kory, has asked why I give so much of my time to Alpha Chi Omega and my beloved Xi Chapter. My response almost always revisits my recruitment days. Walking through house after house as a potential first- generation sorority member was overwhelming, and waiting to be offered return visits to Nebraska chapter houses was even more so to a naïve 18-year-old not understanding the process of recommendations and the weight of GPAs, ACTs, and activities. The process was anxiety-inducing, and for some, even disappointing. On Bid Day, I held my breath as I opened my bid card. In the moment, I was wondering who chose me, who was welcoming me home for the next four years. The card read Alpha Chi Omega, and I couldn't have been more thrilled. I felt like, for the first time in a long time, I was offered a chance at something big. I was so excited for the opportunity and so proud to wear our letters. As I reached my 50th birthday this past April, I reflected on my life and the huge part that Alpha Chi Omega has played. I have had the opportunity to lead and to continue to meet new sisters. Our chapter has risen, and a few times fallen, but through both difficult and wonderous times, Xi has my heart. If I could go back and give my 18-year-old self a piece of advice, it would be that Alpha Chi Omega did not choose me; we chose each other. I needed her then and she needs me now. I ask you to reflect on what Alpha Chi has meant to you and how our sisters have shaped you as a person. Are you able to help another sister have a similar experience to yours?
