12A - The Daily Iowan - Iowa City. Iowa - Friday, January 21 , 1994 --------------------.. ~~~~~----------------------------~~-------. FIRE Continued from Page 1A About 22 of the 25 residents were in the house at the time of the fire . The 130-year-old house is expect- ed to be a complete loss, with early estimates to replace the .tructure ranging from $760,000 to $1 mil- lion. "We've lost everything we had, all our possessions, but they are msterial - we're lucky to be alive: ' Walz said. Fraternity members are tem- porarily staying at the Union Iowa , Hou.e until other arrangements can be made. • ·We want to keep the men together as a functioning unit," . said Mary Peterson, associate .' director of Campus Programl and Student Activities. The fire was reported around 9 < a.m ., and fire departmenta from Iowa City, Coralville and West Branch arrived on the scene short- ly thereafter. • Upon arrival, firefighters saw , flames coming out of the struc- ture'a front door. They proceeded to attack the fire from the back and entered the building from both aide entrances. The tire was primarily located on the firat and second floora of the building, Battalion Chief Terry Fiala said. On those floors smoke poured out, blocking vil ibility of the front of the house. Some of the fraternity members · returned to the Icene as the fire fighters continued to fight the · blaze. "We went back while it was still . blazing - we were in shock. It really hasn't sunk in," Walz said. Around 11 a .m ., the forceful stream of dark smoke seemed to lessen, but at about 1 p.m . the third floor caught fire. Shortly after, the roof caved in. Eckardt said Harding told him, "You know, you need to stop screw- ing around with this and get it done." Eckardt, who has confeBBed to his role in the alleged plot, also told the newspaper that Gillooly offered a $10,000 USFSA check as a bonus if the attack was carried out immediately. Eckardt told the newspaper that he and Harding spoke about the David Guttenfeider/The Daily Iowan Firefighters battfed a fire all day Thursday at the 13O-year-old Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house. called to help. More than a dozen vehicles assisted in the battle. Efforts were hampered by the freezing temperatures outdoors and the extreme heat and smoke coming from the building. "Our problem was we could get people in there, but we just couldn't get to the tire," Fiala said. "At one point, firefighters broke through a wall to get to the lire, only to find the floor was out.' Fiala said freezing water lines al80 slowed the battle. Masks uaed to combat the smoke also proved troublesome as only two of eight kept from freezing up. One resident of the house said he and some others thought they smelled Bomething like burning rubber at 2 B.m . that morning. plot in Portland, while Stant was in Massachusetts trying to find an opportunity to attack Kerrigan at a rink near Boston. A sheriff's deputy's affidavit said Eckardt told him that Harding tried to help Stant by learning Ker- rigan's practice schedule in Massa- chusetts. There were records in the affi- davit of phone calls from Harding's house to Kerrigan's practice arena, a trail or money from Portland to Phoenix to Boston and Detroit and allegations of concocted alibis. Steve Kremer, a UI student who lives near the fraternity house, said he smelled something like incense burning at 7:30 a.m., but didn't question it at the time. Due to massive structural dam- age, an officially stated cause of the fire ia not expected for at lea8t a few days, Fiala said. The Phi Kappa Psi house is owned by the fraternity and its alumni . Because insurance cover- age will fall short of the actual damage, a fund has been set up for donations. In addition, other fraternities and sororities have donated cloth- ing and offered meals, absences from classes were excused, and the UI Student Association has pledged at least $200. Alumni are coming into town tomorrow to help current members, Walz said. Phi Kappa Psi alumni adviser Doug Parsons said the fraternity would like to rebuild. "Even though a lot of memories have gone up in smoke with this fire, we plan to rebuild," Parsons said. "We hope we can do so in the near future. Any help we get will be greatly appreciated." The chapter is enthusiastic about rebuilding, Walz said. "We want to keep the house," he said. "There's too much tradition there to let that go by.· DI Reporter Tory Brecht con- tributed to this report.
