INDIANA GAMMA CHAPTER T he ΣAE Gamma cycling team put on a courageous performance at the 2024 Little 500, securing a commendable sixth- place finish. The weather was perfect for racing, providing an ideal backdrop for the team's efforts. Brothers trained rigorously for this event, and their dedication was evident in their performance. A detailed race plan had been established; however, coaches Bill Naas '94 and Travis Verhoff '14 empowered the team with the flexibility to adjust their strategy as needed during the race. This proved to be a key element in what was an exciting day for ΣAE cycling and our fraternity. The first 25 laps of the race were brisk as the teams aimed to separate from the herd. Following a few slower laps, the ΣAE riders made an attack at lap 41 and put a gap on the rest of the field. This bold move allowed ΣAE to establish a half-lap lead, maintaining the lead for an impressive 108 laps, through lap 149. During this period of the race, the IUSF announcer repeatedly noted, "It has been ΣAE all day!" Despite the team's strong effort, the chase group tirelessly worked to close the gap, finally catching up on lap 157. ΣAE Gamma cycling lapped 27 teams, but ultimately ran out of energy in the final two laps, resulting in a sixth-place finish. Though the team felt disappointed, knowing they were capable of a higher placement, they took pride in their aggressive racing strategy. They had agreed to compete actively rather than riding conservatively. With determination and new race experience, the ΣAE team looks forward to returning even stronger next year. The ΣAE Little 500 team is in the top echelon at Indiana University; our program could not be successful without you! The pre-race tailgate was a big success. Many alumni brothers and past riders attended as well as families of the current team and from past teams. With all our riders returning for the 2025 Little 500, they are continuing to pile up the miles, balancing their days with their summer jobs. Our team is also competing all summer in criterium races in Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Lawrenceburg, IN. The ΣAE Cycling team will be ready again to race at a high level, and we look forward to your continued support.
