T H E I N D I A N A G R A M INDIANA GAMMA CHAPTER OF SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY SUMMER 2024 I n order to address questions regarding the status of the chapter, I have always found it easier to be direct. Following an investigation by Indiana University, Indiana Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon accepted responsibility for violating the following provisions of the Code: Part II. C. Student Responsibilities and Conduct Personal Misconduct/C1b: Acts of fraud, misrepresentation, or dishonesty, including the following: knowingly furnishing false, forged, or inappropriately altered information to any university official, or emergency response personnel. Part II. C. Student Responsibilities and Conduct Personal Misconduct/C7: Failure to comply with the directions of authorized university officials in the performance of their duties, including, but not limited to: failure to identify oneself when requested to do so; failure to comply with the terms of a conduct outcome or process; or refusal to vacate a university facility when directed to do so. Part II. C. Student Responsibilities and Conduct Personal Misconduct/C19: Hazing. Hazing is defined as any conduct or threats of conduct that subject another individual, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the individual, as a condition of association with a team, group, or organization, regardless of the individual's consent or lack of consent. This behavior includes but is not limited to direct or indirect written, verbal, physical, or electronic actions or inactions. Both individual students and student organizations, including fraternities and sororities, may be disciplined for acts of hazing. As a result of the sanctions, the chapter and the Fraternity Service Center were able to negotiate an agreement with the following expectations: • The chapter was placed on probationary status until 2025, which ensures the chapter will comply with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and university policies moving forward. • Educational sanctions to strengthen the chapter's health and safety policies, member education, and social practices. • The chapter will also participate in a redevelopment retreat led by the Fraternity Service Center to help the chapter lay a foundation for success. It's important to point out that this is not simply a period of probation with sanctions levied against Indiana Gamma. Rather, this is a plan where the chapter will be benchmarked and evaluated during this time. Sanctions and restrictions will be lifted as the chapter demonstrates it has completed each step. A chapter review was conducted in April. Many thanks to the following brothers who helped conduct the review: Mike Ansert '95, Dan Aron '83, Matt Barresi '92, Mike Battista '95, Ben Buddig '13, Brian Betner '96, Lance Bloomberg '93, Dan Burn '02, Matt Burns '99, Tony Cremer '92, Brad Faulkenberg '97, Alex Garrison '12, Richard Glenn '84, Justin Hillman '13, Jim Homerighausen '88, Scott Hughes '88, Chris Laughlin '84, Nick Martell '16, Ryan McBee '02, Dennis McCall '84, Steve Mitchell '83, Bill Naas '94, Jeff Naas '97, Chad Ruston '94, Brian Tobin '81, Mark Tucker '92, David Welsh '86, Mike Wurtsbaugh '84, and Bryce Zoeller. We believe that the remaining brothers represent Gamma in a positive light. O U R A S K : We need to reform the House Corporation to provide more engaged oversight and leadership for the chapter. We have three very strong Chapter Advisors, Brent Burke '76, Paul DelRe '82, and Bill Naas '94, but they need help. Ideally, we need at least six members who can make periodic visits to the chapter, attend chapter meetings, and provide mentoring to our undergraduates. To be clear, we believe the membership review has eliminated those members who do not have an interest in becoming a better version of themselves, becoming strong leaders, and exhibiting the traits associated with being a True Gentleman. If you have an interest in participating on the House Corporation, please reach out to me.
