"Through my father (Paul '52) and uncle (Phil '56), I often heard stories of their Fraternity days and their continued friendships with their Iowa Alpha Brothers," he said. After a spring recruitment weekend, Jim and his high school friend Charley Jensen '77 were sold by the end of their visit. It wasn't long before Jim's younger brother, Dan '80, joined the Phi Psi fold as well. "I always looked up to our uncle Phil and was particularly impressed both with how important Iowa Alpha was in his college experience and the way in which he maintained those brotherly friendships all the days of his life." The Bartlett family legacy continued with Jim's brother-in-law Chip Robison '80 as well as his two sons, Charlie '03 and John '08. "We were all close as family already, and I think that made the Brotherhood very special," Jim said. Each Iowa Alpha Bartlett takes pride in their Phi Kappa Psi background and connections in college and beyond. Jim recalls a fun environment that maintained high standards of leadership and scholarship, joining many of his Brothers in graduate or professional school after their four undergraduate years. Today, he enjoys a large sports text chain with his Brothers and frequently sees many of them in the Des Moines area for sporting events, golf, and other reunions. They've also supported one another in the tough times, such as fundraising for Brothers who lost their children to cancer. Dan agrees that the best part of Phi Psi was the meaningful lifelong friendships he received. "These were certainly forged initially during our pledge semester; however, they continued to develop all my years at Iowa, including dental school." When Jim's sons joined, he loved the opportunity to show them where he lived in the Chapter House and share his own Phi Psi memories— much like Paul and Phil shared with him and Dan before. This also allowed Jim to reunite with Brothers whose own sons had joined. Following in the family footsteps, Jim's sons found the Phi Psi legacy to provide immense value. "Phi Psi was instrumental in providing the balance I needed to excel academically while also making the most of my college years," Charlie said. "During recruitment, Blair Schoell '03 was genuinely eager for me to join and shared a focused understanding of my family's legacy within the Fraternity." "The family legacy drew me to Phi Psi, and the friends I made led to an unforgettable college experience," John added. Jim now has seven grandsons (including two of Charlie's, and two of John's) and is hopeful he'll recruit them, too, someday. "I guess it's become a family tradition to be a Phi Psi," he said. "Having a legacy deepens your bonds to the Chapter and makes it even more valuable." What Phi Kappa Psi connections have made an impact in your life?
