Page 3 From Small-Market TV to ESPN and Back Again Scott Reiss '93 Shares His Career Highlights W hile Scott Reiss '93 didn't enter Stanford determined to join a fraternity, he was certainly open to it. He and a group of dorm friends decided to attend a SigEp event and left with a positive feeling about the members. After attending more events, the nine friends joined. "The rest is history," Scott said. As an undergraduate, Scott had the opportunity to serve as both vice president and president, which were invaluable to his development as a young adult: as vice president, Scott learned how to organize groups and teams and became a more efficient person; as president, he learned how to be a leader. Scott has been able to call on these skills throughout his career in sports broadcasting. Scott first became interested in journalism when he took a broadcast journalism class his senior year of high school; once a week they had a cable access live newscast for which Scott was the sports anchor. "When I went to Stanford, I went in with the idea that if there was something else that I found more enticing, I would certainly go that route," Scott said. "But at the end of the day, I couldn't find anything that seemed more fun than sports broadcasting." Scott began his career in small-market television, working in Panama City, Florida; Utica, New York; and Santa Maria, California. At age 29, he got his big break as an anchor at ESPN, where he worked for eight years anchoring shows including SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, and NFL Live. "Nothing will compare to the first time I anchored SportsCenter," Scott shared. "Sitting on that set at ESPN and realizing that somehow, someway I had made it to this spot was pretty overwhelming." Scott then moved back to California and worked as the main sports anchor for Comcast SportsNet before becoming the voice of Stanford football and men's basketball for 10 years. The pinnacle of Scott's Stanford career was calling the New Year's Day 2016 Rose Bowl. In 2022, Scott left to become the sports director at KCTV5. While it was difficult to leave Stanford and California, it was the right career move for him at the right time, and it has been rewarding for Scott to be back in a full-time TV setting. In the little over a year he's worked there, Scott has already covered two Super Bowl championships. Additional career highlights for Scott include hosting pregame and postgame shows for the Giants for three World Series and writing his book, Where They Were Then: Sportscasters, which shares the stories of national sportscasters from their humble beginnings to their big breaks. Scott's favorite hobbies include sports (of course), traveling, walking dog Rilee, and hanging out with his friends. He has been married to his wife, Jennifer, for 18 years, and they have two boys, Lucas (15) and Cody (13), with whom Scott enjoys spending time. Scott's California Pi brothers remain his closest friends more than 30 years later. For the first time in program history, all # executive officers were given the opportunity to attend Carlson Leadership Academy with a specialized track for their position. This program, held in multiple cities across the country, gives new officers a boost to personal leadership development. It focuses on teaching the skills to help them inspire brothers, manage a committee, and follow through on those goals. Officers build a supportive cohort of brothers in their roles to network with throughout the year. Scott Reiss '93 with his family. Yosef Aklilu | Fresno, Calif.
