UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI SPRING 2024 T H E TA D ATA C ontinuing his graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati (followed by teaching at Xavier) gave Bryan Buechner '14 a unique opportunity: to stay involved in and volunteer with the SigEp brotherhood that helped him succeed as an undergraduate. Bryan has volunteered in many roles through the years, and he is now honored to transition into roles that closely assist the Alumni Volunteer Corporation—such as leading the event planning for Ohio Theta's 75th anniversary. "The timing of the anniversary during a period of personal transition feels serendipitous, allowing me to gain experience in organizing a large-scale event, refine my leadership skills, and gain insight into the operational side of the fraternity," Bryan said. "I'm particularly grateful to Rey Medina '99 for his mentorship and trust in me to take on this larger role." Bryan and his team of over 25 alumni are working hard to make this "once-in-a-lifetime" event as affordable and travel-friendly as can be. "It's not every day that a local fraternity chapter reaches such a monumental milestone, especially one with such a rich history and tradition of excellence," he said. "The weekend will be a walk down memory lane, a chance to reconnect and rekindle, and a celebration of past and future." 75 Years of Balanced Men In the first weekend of October, alumni will celebrate 75 years of growth—both for the beautiful UC campus and our updated home at 321 Joselin Avenue. They can look forward to great food, drinks, and brotherhood from the opening reception on campus to a banquet at the renowned American Sign Museum. This event also honors our chapter's recent and future successes as the active chapter continues to thrive at both the UC and national SigEp levels. "The on-campus brothers are so excited for this event and have been integral in its planning," Bryan added. "They can't wait to engage and connect with their alumni brothers." As chairman of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Bryan feels energized by continually connecting with brothers across generations and witnessing their excitement for the event. "Everybody has a unique SigEp experience, but the common thread that binds them all together, I believe, is brotherhood. That's what this weekend is all about: laughter, camaraderie, nostalgia, and being reminded of why Ohio Theta is such a special place. This weekend will offer something for everyone." Lifetime Brotherhood Bryan enrolled at UC as a first-generation college student and learned of SigEp through the Balanced Man Scholarship. The brothers became his people, and while he felt he understood the cardinal principles, values, and rituals, embodying them felt more elusive as an undergraduate. Now as an alumnus, father, and educator, he sees how the ideals of the Balanced Man have impacted his life and knows he can rely on the brotherhood daily. "I know it's not realistic to expect members to have the exact same experience I did—things change! Rather, my hope is that they find similar value from their own experiences, revel in the bonds of brotherhood, and continue to embody the spirit of SigEp as they transition into the alumni ranks," Bryan said. Each brother has a unique story, and Bryan looks forward to hearing more of them in October as we celebrate a history of excellence and embark on a new era for Ohio Theta; one that promises to be the best yet.
