The Deke Newsletter GAMMA PHI CHAPTER AT WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY | SPRING 2024 Alumni Volunteers Help Gamma Phi Thrive Update from the Kent Literary Club T he undergraduate brotherhood continues to grow stronger! They excel across all facets of campus life and are in the process of recruiting and initiating a new cadre of brothers. It is extremely fulfilling to watch these young men shine. They are a remarkable and responsible group, and interacting with them keeps me and the rest of the Kent Literary Club young. But why should we have all the fun? Brothers, we're in search of volunteers for the KLC, and you could be the perfect fit! The board advises the undergraduates, manages 276 High Street, coordinates Homecoming and reunion events, and addresses other matters as they arise. All communication is accomplished via email, texts and, when necessary, Zoom calls. The time commitment is minimal, and the rewards are maximal. Join today to put your time and experience to work for DKE! By way of a house update, we still have several plans and suggestions that we discuss on a semi-regular basis. For more details, please contact me or any of the board members. Thank you for continuing to support Gamma Phi as we provide for our undergraduate brothers! In the Bonds, Gary D. Breitbord '79 President, Kent Literary Club (508) 740-9310 gbreitbo@aol.com I t is my pleasure to give you a firsthand account of how Gamma Phi is navigating life on campus this year! Back in September, Dave Bagatelle '86 and I made the trip to Middletown to participate in the first chapter meeting of the new school year. We also took in a little bit of football and soccer practice. Colin Campbell '25, our UG president, assembled the 49 members in a classroom at Freeman Athletic Center. The young lions were pleased to hear that we had once again been granted permission to allow the collegians in the chapter house for Homecoming. They were very excited, as most of them had never set foot in 276 High Street and were eager to see it along with their parents. That care and appreciation for our history is one of the reasons I love these guys so much. Further discussions ensued regarding the group taking advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate DKE's commitment to enhancing all aspects of campus life. The meeting ended and the brothers shook our hands and thanked Bags and me for being there and for the support of the alumni. Then on January 31, I made a trip to the first chapter meeting of the second semester. The chapter discussed philanthropic initiatives and spring recruitment, among other topics. (More details in the chapter president's article on page 2!) This group of brothers remains enthusiastic and optimistic despite not yet having a house to call home. They understand it is a work in progress and have been very gracious.
