Check out what else your brothers are up to inside! MAINE ALPHA - UNIVERSITY OF MAINE FALL 2023 RED DOOR NEWS Never Too Late to Serve T he Lifetime Responsibility of Brotherhood reminds us that we have made a lifetime commitment by joining Sigma Phi Epsilon, and as such, we have taken an obligation to share in its work and assume our share of the responsibilities. The harsh reality is that as life moves forward, that commitment can take a backseat as you head off to graduate school, begin your career, start a family, or travel the world. That certainly happened to me! As a UMaine undergraduate, I participated in several clubs and extracurricular activities, but the one that provided me the greatest sense of belonging was SigEp. I quickly moved into the Maine Alpha Chapter House and lived there for three years, forging friendships and relationships that will last a lifetime. In addition, SigEp helped me become a better leader and develop the skills necessary to succeed in my future endeavors. (As a bonus, I became pretty good at ping pong!) However, that harsh reality of life slowly set in. After graduation, I moved to Portland to attend the University of Maine School of Law. I graduated with my Juris Doctor, passed my bar exam, and was sworn into the Maine Bar. Shortly thereafter, I joined the law firm Pierce Atwood in Portland. Since then, most of my time has been dedicated to my work, culminating in a 10-year hiatus from Sigma Phi Epsilon. Recent years have seen an overhaul in the makeup of the Alumni Volunteer Corporation at a time when there are several critical projects underway. A recent conversation with a brother reminded me of the lifetime commitment I made to SigEp, so I decided to step in as President of the AVC Executive Board in the hopes of providing some stability. Maine Alpha has worked diligently to explore ways to improve the chapter house, grow membership back to its pre-pandemic numbers, help alumni find ways to get more involved, and continue the excellence that we all expect of SigEp. You'll learn more in this and future editions of our newsletter. There is plenty more to be done, and I am excited to join such a wonderful group to help see it through to the end! Fraternally, Alexander Price '13, AVC President aprice@pierceatwood.com A Homecoming Well Spent Honoring Our Bond as SigEp Black Bears H omecoming Weekend 2023 was a thrilling time of fun and fellowship for the brothers of Maine Alpha. Game day on October 14 began with our annual SigEp breakfast at the Chapter House, deliciously cooked by the undergraduates. After everybody had their fill, the Alumni Volunteer Corporation held its annual meeting and elected its new officers and Board of Trustees. (See the list on page 4.) The festivities continued with—what else—a tailgate by Alfond Stadium! Brothers enjoyed food and camaraderie all afternoon, with some heading into the stadium to see the Black Bears' 24-13 win over the Long Island Sharks. To conclude the weekend, SigEp performed a Brother Mentor Rite for Brothers Ethan Cassidy '24, John McLaughlin '24, and Kyle Lee '24. We look forward to the great things these brothers and their peers will do for Maine Alpha and can't wait for next year's UMaine Homecoming! Maine Alpha brothers and Pi Beta Phi sisters share their creativity in a pumpkin carving social at the Chapter House. Brothers and Delta Zeta sisters prepare freshly baked goods for the bake sale!
