Saturday, August 21, 2010 – Daily News – 5B Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Revolution in the Genesis Generation Can spiritual warfare explain some things in people's lives? (MCT) THE BATTLE IS IN OUR OWN MINDS Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: Some faiths refer to "spiritual warfare" as a battle between good and evil or between God and Satan. Buddhism is a non-theistic faith, therefore this idea or concept doesn't really work. In addition, from the Buddhist perspective, the concept of Satan is something that is not separate from our own mind and is referred to as "Mara." Mara is known as the "tempter" and tempts us to act in less than virtuous ways. So the battle is not between any external forces, but the battle is really within our own mind. The brilliant cartoonist Walt Kelly created the wonderful character of Pogo. One of Pogo's most famous lines was, "We have met the enemy and he is us." It is funny but true because our negative emotions are our worst enemy. In one of the sutras, the Buddha said: "Imagine you are on a battlefield with thousands of troops all around you. You must fight them all single handedly, and you manage to conquer them all. Now imagine doing this a thousand times." The Buddha said doing that is an easier task than conquering one's own mind. It is our duty to do battle with the enemy of nega- tive emotions. If we truly wish to achieve any kind of ultimate happiness, we have to use the antidote of mindfulness to fight against this enemy. Meditation is an excellent method for cultivating this kind of mind- fulness. THE BIBLE ADDRESSES THE CONFLICT Pastor Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ: Spiritual warfare is clearly addressed in Scripture to reveal that people have issues of inner struggle that can and usually do result in troubling circumstances. Spiritual warfare is God's combative in-fighting against such things described as "methods of the devil."Ephesians 6:10-18describes the spiritual armor to be put on to protect against demonic forces. The two most important readings are 2nd Corinthi- ans 10:4-5 and James 4:1-6. Both texts illustrate the inbred strife provoking warfare. The major text that reveals human inner strife resulting from our own inner passions, even to possible criminal activity, is James 4:1-6, which puts the cause for such troubles as human pride. But to be inclusive of the health care methods, these texts are not foreign to the concerns of the med- ical sciences that fit the profile of human troubles. Some may see these as alternative methods, but the warfare is yet spiritual because of where the problem positions itself. The Corinthians text describes a wrestling that takes place in the mind involving the thoughts and imagination. The medical fields of psy- chiatry and social sciences are in place to address the problems that Scripture describes as spiritual warfare. But the ultimate goal is healing, wellness and wholeness. The ultimate answer is Ephesians 6:17- 18. This is the first in a three-part series on the Genesis Generation — the generation that begins with There is a revolution in the Genesis Generation. It is limit- ing abortions and sexual activity in teens in ways not seen since the ‘60s. According to the Guttmacher Institute the revolu- tion is linked to abstinence edu- cation programs and the restric- tive laws and atmosphere more likely to be found in conserva- tive (red) states. Twenty of 24 studies reviewed in 2009 found public funding restrictions on abortion reduced abortions. Likewise, studies cited by the research arm of Planned Paret- hood showed that parental involvement and informed con- sent laws reduced abortions in Massachusetts and Texas — a blue and a red state respectively. The overall abortion rate — in our country — is down by about 30 percent from the highs of the eighties and by 40 percent per capita in the Genesis Generation. Comparing the states won by George Bush to those won by John Kerry in 2004 the blue states’ rates of abortion were two thirds higher. But in the five states voting strongest for John McCain in ’08 versus the five most staunchly pro-Obama the abortion rate was more than three times higher in the blue states. Atmosphere and values really do count for shaping behavior. Abstinence education is often blamed for increasing — or just ridiculed as impotent to reduce — teen sexual activity. In fact, teen sexual activity commencing before ages 17 and 19 is back to about a third — down from reported highs of around two thirds in the nineties. The jury is still out on postponing activity until marriage, but the absti- nence education programs have been proven in study after study to be the main driver in at least postponing activity until the end of the teen years. The Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine published a study in February in which middle school students were divided into abstinence-only, con- traception-only, mixed instruction, and no instruction on sex edu- cation. The abstinence- only group went on to engage in sexual activ- ity at rates more than 60 per cent below the contraception-only group, and they did much better than the other groups as well. Even the no-instruction group did better than the contraception-only group. In addition, the use of condoms was just as prevalent in all of the groups for those who engaged in sex — the absti- nence-only program did not inhibit condoms, only experi- mentation. These findings are supported by the federal Centers for Dis- ease Control, even as the CDC continues to attack abstinence- only instruction as ineffective. Many years ago — when the incidence of abortion and early sexual activity was much higher than it is today and I was still in congregational ministry — a mother brought in her teenaged daughter because she was fearful of the girl’s drinking. But when I began to speak to the girl about substance abuse and addiction issues the mother told me in words of one syllable that we would get nowhere telling the girl she should not do what she wanted to do because "all of her friends are doing it." I have been involved in recov- ery ministries since the seventies and the truth is that recovery requires a new vision and new friends to support it, not a throw- up-your-hands attitude. That new James Wilson GodTalk vision must be presented with honesty — I shared some of my own youthful miss-steps, and how poorly they worked out for me — and a non-judg- mental approach. But it must be presented with the courage of conviction and the information to back it up. Nobody wants to be moralized at — and young people spot hypocrisy at the speed of light — but everybody wants to hear the truth, even if it is not what we hoped it would be. Reality is that rates of abortion and early sexual activity are falling in the United States. They are falling because absti- nence teaching, compas- sion for young people on the part of elders, and simple non-judg- mental prayer are on the rise and are driving the changes. What if the rest of us get over defending a bankrupt position and board a train that is actually going somewhere that is good for our families? What if we choose to recognize that Jesus not only embodies truth; he actually tells the truth when He says that the marriage covenant is the only safe place to express ourselves sexually, as in Mark 10:6-9? What if we decide to actively support a culture of life in our associations, our words, and our deeds – as though that were a core component of our identity? If we make these decisions we will obtain what they point toward — in His grace alone. Want to know more?
