Students: learned how trash gets from the streets to the rivers, streams and other receiving waters in their town, examined preserved specimens of Pacific Ocean marine life; had a chance to see and touch living sea stars, sea urchins, marine snails and other residents of the Pacific Ocean; and learned how ingredients, obtained from marine resources are used in everyday products such as ice cream, toothpaste, lipstick, etc. Gary challenged the children to help make their environment a cleaner, safer and healthier place to live. A 1, 2009 D M P 15 by Jim McGovern QUARTZSITE- Five 'would be' country singers entertained a crowd at Tyson Wells Showground, on a pleasant spring Saturday. Alaina Blair won the Local Competi- tion March 7th by wowing the judges and the audience with an upbeat, star-quality performance. Alaina's fam- ily accompanied her from Phoenix and her grandpar- ents joined them from California. Second runner-up, Brittany Anderson, advanced with a typical country song, and then sang an upbeat encore which the judges said might have been a better performance to score. Gary Pace, came in third place. James Enlow crooned tributes to "…my woman, my wife…". The crowd stood and sang with Tena Sorensen to Lee Greenwood's, Proud to Be an American – a song choice for Tena's encore performance. Tena competed with her arm in a sling, handicapped from a recent harrowing, near death accident. An ADOT employee working near the highway, Tena was accidentally knocked down and into oncoming interstate highway traf- fic. A truck veered to only graze her, but seriously dislocated her shoulder. Tena MOUNTAIN QUAIL Country Showdown "shows up" in Quartzsite explained that fellow ADOT employees leaped into the roadway and removed her from further certain danger. The Showdown was produced by the Quartzsite Chamber and Tourism volun- teers, Barbara Martin, The Holt Group and Angie Masales. Three seasoned pro- fessionals judged the performances – Rural Teague, Old Time Fiddlers, Glenna O'Neil, a country songwriter, and Barbara Norman, a professional Dobro Picker. For 28 years, Colgate has sponsored the annual talent search competition which has contributed to the careers of country stars, like Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, and many, many others. In fact, three years ago, the Parker - Showdown produced the national competition winner, Michelle Renee, a then, seventeen year old from Phoenix. This year's local talent competition was held at Tyson Wells Showgrounds on the same flatbed stage which entertained devout Bluegrass goers the week earlier. The stage was contributed by Toe Truck, a Parker / Quartzsite-area AAA Service provider and a Quartzsite Chamber member. Sound was supplied by local nurs- ery owner and Quartzsite Chamber President, Carlos Castro. His brother Fabian Castro was DJ and Emcee. The Tyson Wells Showground was supplied by local developer, Kim Scott. A cool spring breeze brought an end to the Showdown and to the delight of the winner, Alaina Blair, who will compete next at the state competition later this year. The Road to the Finals will proceed through state and regional competitions then on to the National Finals, January, 2010. Best of luck to our local Quartzsite winner, Alaina Blair… We'll be watching… SPECIAL SECTION
