Jessica Rascon, 8th grade student from Scholars' Academy won 1st place when 18 students from La Paz County registered to compete in the 27th Annual La Paz County Spelling Bee February 17, 2009. This was the fi rst year that the Scholars' Academy entered into the competition and they took 1st place! Jessica will advance to the Arizona State Spelling Bee competition on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the KAET Channel 8 Studios located at Arizona State University in Tempe. The 27 top County and Regional spellers from across Arizona will compete to determine who will rep- resent Arizona in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee held on May 26- 28. Jessica's winning word ws "pueb- lo". Jessica will be studying a "huge book" of very diffi cult words to pre- pare her for the upcoming competi- tion. "I've got lots of homework to do," she said. It will be held at the pavilion/dance slab, and will include a barbecue lunch of burgers, hot dogs, salads, drinks and desserts. There is no charge for lunch, but donations are wel- come to help offset the cost of the food. Entertainment this year will be provided by the Good Time Grand- pas playing some great country music. Paul Winer will play some boogie woogie piano again this year, and the Quartzsite Clowns will be there to bring some extra laughter! A raffl e will also be held, and tours of the Gardens will be available if requested.Come on out and enjoy some great music, deli- cious food, and lots of laughs!! Party in the Park Mar 22 Countdown to Arizona's Centennial Celebration The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) of Quartzsite has already started working on their proposed events for February 14, 20012 Centen- nial Celebration! Centennial Commit- tee chairperson, Angie Masales and her committee have already met on several occasions to start the plans for this Statewide celebration. Trying to coordinate the "Past with the Future", a tentative schedule of events has been set in motion. The Centennial Celebration encom- passed the whole year starting on Feb- ruary 12, 2011. Some ideas for events are Mustache Growing Contest, several Scavenger Hunts, Special Gardens, Old Fashioned Picnic Basket Auction, Pie Tasting Contest, Special Olympics, Music in the Park, May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Go Cart & R/C Car Races, 4th of July, Cowboy Poetry, Arts & Craft Fes- tival, Fishing Contest, Kite Flying, Bow & Arrow Contest, Halloween Contest, Turkey Hunt, Road Rally, Ornament Contest, Tree Decorating Contest, Com- munity Holiday Party, Music Competi- tions, with more Scavenger Hunts! This is a huge undertaking and the GFWC Quartzsite Women's Club is looking for volunteers, every non-profi t and for-profit organization and the Town of Quartzsite to help make this a successful yearlong celebration. The GFWC Quartzsite Women's Club would like to invite anyone who would like to volunteer with any of these events.
