THE HOUSE THAT BUILT US T he demand for the fraternity experience at Iowa State remains strong. This fall, over 450 men signed up for formal recruitment—a 20-year high-water mark! With an increasing number of students seeking the transformational fraternity experience, Pi Kappa Alpha must remain competitive in the ever-changing Greek environment. To successfully accomplish this, 2112 Lincoln Way needs to be modernized. Rebuilding Our Brotherhood After our own successful summer and fall recruitment period, the Provisional Chapter recruited 28 men and now sits at a total Chapter size of 55. This puts PIKE in the top tier of fraternities on campus. Twenty-three members are living in the house this fall on the second floor. In order to give our brothers the space they need to have an enhanced fraternity experience, we need to rebuild our Chapter House. Your support is key to making this happen. Long-Term Success of Alpha Phi Remember, successfully sustaining Alpha Phi hinges on four factors. We are proud to share updates on our progress: A foundation built on academic success. The Provisional Chapter is continuing to recruit educated men, not men they have to educate. In spring 2023, they achieved the most improved GPA of all Greek Houses on campus! Established code of conduct. The chapter presented their accountability and sustainability plan to alumni leadership this past spring. This has resulted in the reoccupation of 2112 Lincoln Way. The chapter is currently operating a dry facility and we have hired Mike Kelly as house director. Engaging the undergraduates. The House Corp., Alumni Association, and Chapter Advisory Board are actively engaging with chapter leadership. Local alumni participated in Work Week and continue to assist with chartering goals. Investing in our home. To date, 61 brothers have contributed $974,578 toward our $2 million campaign goal. I extend my deepest gratitude to these brothers and to the alumni who have invested their time into this project, including the members of the building committee, who are continuing to work hard on financial proformas, modeling, and rendering. Be a Part of Our Success! We have begun to lay the groundwork for a stronger Alpha Phi—we need your support to see it through. Successful fraternity and sorority fundraising campaigns have around 20-25% of alumni participation; we have 6%. We know we can do better! PIKE has a history of being above average across all areas of operations; let's show that we're above average again by increasing our participation. If we receive just another 15-20% engagement from our brothers, we can achieve our goal! Ready to get involved? Volunteer your time on the House Corporation Board, get involved on the Pike Alumni Association, or meet the Provisional Chapter." Supporting the Learning Lab of PIKE Mark Zirkelbach '67 Shares Alpha Phi's Influence and Why He Gives Back Arriving on Campus Coming to Iowa State from a small farming community in eastern Iowa, Mark Zirkelbach '67 didn't quite know what he was looking for. After moving into the dorms, he struck up a friendship with a fellow resident who had pledged Pi Kappa Alpha. Mark's new friend brought him over to the house to meet the brothers, and Mark appreciated the diversity. He knew being a part of PIKE would expand his college experience beyond his agriculture major. Sure enough, it did, and PIKE has played a key role in shaping Mark's life. As he looks back, one of his fondest memories was finally winning the Veishea float competition as chairman during the last year he participated. That year, he met his future wife, who was the ADPi chairman. They are still married today. (Continued on back)
