He recalls gathering around the TV with his brothers and some popcorn, waiting to see what birthday would be selected first. When Mark's birthday was drawn (September 14), he knew he needed to make a decision about the military. Two of his fraternity brothers were in the Iowa National Guard Officer Candidate School and told him to check it out. Mark was accepted as a junior cadet. After graduation, Mark went back to his family farm, where he remained for 15 years while serving part-time in the military. During that time, he served as a local school board member and a Farm Bureau director. After being promoted in the National Guard, he moved to Cedar Rapids and eventually Des Moines, where he continued serving in the military and became active in the community as the Rotary chapter president, Gold Star Museum director, and the Iowa National Guard Foundation president. During the 40 years he served in the National Guard, Mark had many experiences and made many memories. He made promotions, commanded at Battalion and Troop Command levels, and served as a recruiting manager, personnel director, and chief of staff. Putting PIKE Skills to Work "The Iowa Guard is similar to a lot of large organizations and similar to a fraternity," Mark shared. "In order for an organization to be successful and to thrive, there are three basic tenets: you have to recruit people who want to belong to your organization; you must have the resources that are equal to or better than the expectations; and you must have good training. You're successful if you can put all three together. I didn't realize it at the time, but I initially learned that in PIKE." After retiring as the Deputy Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, Mark became active with Alpha Phi. During a monthly luncheon in Des Moines, he was asked to join the House Corporation Board, of which he eventually became president. After suffering a stroke, he passed the baton to another member and remained on the board. Paying It Back to Alpha Phi Mark sees fraternities as learning laboratories and understands the importance of the fraternity experience. This is why he remains involved with Alpha Phi and why he's supporting the 2112: The House That Built Us capital campaign. "Living in a fraternity, you learn all the aspects of running a fraternity: recruiting members, balancing a budget, caring for the house, and building a reputation around the university," Mark said. "That exposure and experience of running a fraternity is similar to running a business and prepares you for future challenges in life." In his free time, Mark tries to go on a fishing trip to Canada each year. His children are grown, and each have families of their own. His oldest son works for Amazon in Kansas City; his middle daughter works with the Iowa Education Agency; and his youngest daughter works for a competitive designer for the Alpha Phi housing project!
