GRAHAM THOMAS NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE e List for 2023 has a little bit of everything one might need to build a super football team. Quarterbacks? We got'em. Super quick running backs and wide receivers that make eye-popping grabs? Check and check. Big, strong offensive linemen? Just check out these dudes. Fast, terrorizing defensive linemen that eat quarterbacks for breakfast? Yep, they're on our roster. Dual-threat linebackers that are just as valuable on offense as they are on defense? We've got three of them. Bone-crunching hitters in the secondary? Boom, look no further. e toughest part of e List? No doubt, selecting just 11 guys. ere are certainly several terrific football players in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley who are not included on this list and maybe waking up this morning with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. We understand! And we can't wait for you guys to show us why you belong this season. Let's start with our quarterbacks, led by cover story standout Drake Lindsey of Fayetteville. e 6-foot-5, 220-pound Purple'Dogs signal caller threw for 3,751 yard and 37 touchdowns last year and just three interceptions as a junior. With a loaded receiving corps at Fayetteville, expectations are through the roof for an even better performance in 2023. Senior quarterback Carter Nye (6-1, 175) at Bentonville is one of three Tigers on e List. He threw for 2,968 yards, 28 touchdowns and just four interceptions while leading Bentonville to the Class 7A state title game. He's also a heck of a baseball player and helped his team reach a state championship game there as well. One of Nye's favorite targets at Bentonville will be wideout C.J. Brown (6-1, 190), who verbally committed to play football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Brown hauled in 75 passes for 1,384 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Brown was especially dangerous in the postseason, catching eight passes in the Tigers' playoff wins over Cabot and North Little Rock and then nine receptions in the state title game against Bryant. In the backfield, Da'Shawn Chairs of Elkins is the only repeat selection to e List from a year ago. Chairs (5-8, 190) earned all-state honors aer rushing for 1,887 yards and 31 touchdowns on 180 carries. He also caught 26 passes for 246 yards. is was aer a 1,500-yard, 29-touchdown season as a sophomore for the Elks, who are heavy favorites to win the 4A-1 Conference. Chairs hasn't committed to any college yet and has said he'll wait a while before revealing his choice. Bo Williams from Shiloh Christian is another all-state running back, who had 1,481 yards and 30 touchdowns last year for the Class 5A runner-up Saints. He also caught 38 passes for 431 yards and four scores. And don't forget about what Williams brings to the table defensively from a safety position. He's got scholarship offers from Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Pine Bluff along with a preferred walkon spot at Arkansas State. Williams (5-10, 190) isn't the only dual threat on e List. ere's three more to tell you about. For those in the River Valley, Dax Goff (6- 1, 215) of Booneville needs no introduction, but many around the state will get an idea of who he is in 2023. e running back/ linebacker from Booneville rushed for a single-season school record of 2,323 yards and 29 touchdowns a year ago. He had six games eclipsing the 200-yard mark, including 307 yards and three TDs against West Fork. Goff also recorded 87 total tackles (58 solo) and 17 tackles for loss and an interception on defense. e Rogers Mountaineers have a pair of dual threat guys as well. Jacob Jenkins (6-1, 205) rushed for 1,531 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. He set a 7A-West Conference game record with 359 yards on 25 carries against Rogers Heritage, and then in the 7A playoffs, he rushed for 230 yards on 29 carries against Fort Smith Northside. Jenkins also will play a bigger role on defense at a linebacker spot according to coach Chad Harbison. Jenkins' teammate Isaac Chapman (6-0, 205) will play a similar role for the Mounties. e red-haired, red-bearded senior flies around and makes plays for Rogers all over the field. e all-state selection had 69 tackles, seven sacks and 14 quarterback hurries at linebacker on defense. He will see some time in the offensive backfield as well. Now let's talk about the really big boys. And they don't get any bigger than Bentonville West offensive lineman Lane Jeffcoat. Jeffcoat towers over everyone at 6-foot-9 and weights 305 pounds. Bentonville West head coach Bryan Pratt jokes that Jeffcoat has one rule and that's "not to stand by me." Jeffcoat, who has committed to Rice, has started at le tackle for the Wolverines since he was in ninth grade. He was all-state as a sophomore and all-conference as a junior. He also plays basketball where he helped the Wolverines to a conference championship. Down in Fort Smith, offensive lineman Kobe Branham made lots of Arkansas fans happy when he committed to the Razorbacks over the summer, turning down offers from Oklahoma State, SMU and Texas A&M. Branham, who bench presses 385 pounds and squats 500, is just as strong in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average. And last, but certainly not least, is Bentonville senior defensive end Ben Pearson. e 6-foot-2, 205-pound end was the defensive leader for the Tigers, aer an all-state junior season of 15 quarterback sacks and 84 total tackles.
